Construction worker killed in roofing incident at new Vikings stadium

One worker was killed after falling during construction Wednesday morning on the roof of the Minnesota Vikings’ new stadium.

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, one person died and another injured in the accident. The Minneapolis Fire Department said they rescued one worker from a crevice on the roof of the building.

The workers fell about 7:45 a.m., said a statement from John Wood, senior vice president for Mortenson Construction. Both were treated at the scene and taken to nearby hospital, The surviving worker is in serious condition.

Today is an extremely sad day for the Minnesota Vikings organization and the entire stadium team,” the Vikings said in a statement. “Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the individual who passed away, the worker who remains hospitalized, and the more than 1,000 dedicated construction workers who are on the site every day and are also affected by this accident.”

Construction on the $1 billion downtown stadium just passed the halfway mark last month. U.S. Bank Stadium is expected to open in time for the 2016 season.
