Valley High grad Williams selected by Colts

Kerwynn Williams just wanted a shot, and he got one.

The Indianapolis Colts took the Valley High School graduate and former Utah State running back in the seventh round of Saturday’s NFL Draft. Williams was the 24th pick of that round and the No. 230 choice overall.

“I don’t think anyone can pinpoint where they’re going to get drafted, but I’m excited I did and I’ll be a Colt,” he said.

Williams (5 feet 8 inches, 195 pounds) is coming off a big season with the Aggies. He rushed for 1,512 yards and 15 touchdowns and caught 45 passes for 697 yards and five TDs.

His big moment came in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl when Williams rushed for 235 yards and three TDs on 18 carries to become the Most Valuable Player of Utah State’s 41-15 win over Toledo.

At Indianapolis, he most likely will have to make the club on special teams, and last season at Utah State, Williams averaged 27.3 yards per kickoff return.

Now he will be able to show off his speed at Indianapolis, where in February Williams ran 4.48 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine.

“I’m definitely very excited to have the opportunity to pursue my dream,” he said. “It’s a storied program, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

UNLV didn’t have a player drafted for the third year in a row, but two signed free-agent contracts. Linebacker John Lotulelei (5-11, 233) signed with the Seattle Seahawks and Bradley Randle (5-7, 190) with the Minnesota Vikings.

Lotulelei led the Rebels in tackles with 120 last season and was an All-Mountain West first-team selection. Randle ran for 635 yards and a team-high eight TDs.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Lotulelei said. “I can’t wait to start.”
