Marshawn Lynch is looking to profit off his Super Bowl version of “no comment.”
The Seattle Seahawks running back last week filed documents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, seeking to trademark the phrase, “I’m just here so I won’t get fined.”
The news was first reported Monday by the Seattle Times and subsequently confirmed by other media outlets. According to the Times, Lynch plans to sell shirts, hats and other apparel bearing his oft-repeated phrase.
“We heard from our fans and so many of them were saying that they wanted that phrase on the clothing,” Chris Bevans, who heads up Lynch’s “Beast Mode” apparel line, told ESPN.com. “This is just listening to the marketplace.”
In 2008, Lynch trademarked his nickname, “Beast Mode.” Last year, he trademarked, “About That Action Boss,” and items bearing that phrase are available for purchase on his website. It is a shortened version of an answer he gave when asked about his dislike of interviews: “I’m just about that action, boss.”
The Seahawks and Lynch are in discussions regarding a new contract. The team offered him $12 million for 2015 and $9 million for 2016, according to reports Saturday. Lynch is scheduled to make $7 million in 2015 under terms of the four-year deal he signed in 2012.
