UFC’s Irvin fails drug test after Silva bout, NAC says
The Nevada Athletic Commission and attorney general filed a complaint against UFC fighter James “The Sandman” Irvin on Tuesday, alleging he tested positive for two unapproved painkillers after his July 19 light heavyweight fight against Anderson Silva.
A urinalysis conducted on the night of the fight at the Palms showed methadone and oxymorphone in Irvin’s system, the complaint said.
Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said Irvin has 20 days to respond to the complaint in writing and to request a hearing before the commission.
“There could be a fine involved, and or a suspension or revocation of his license,” said Kizer, who added that other conditions could be placed on the fighter.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound Irvin was knocked out by Silva in the first round. Silva landed a right hand to send Irvin to the mat, then pounced on him and connected several shots before the fight was stopped.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship had no immediate comment other than to confirm the positive test.
