Raiders hire offensive coordinator off Patriots’ staff

LOS ANGELES — The Raiders have dipped into the Patriots’ coaching pool again and reached back to their past to fill three positions on their staff.

Patriots wide receivers coach Mick Lombardi has been hired by new Raiders coach Josh McDaniels as the team’s offensive coordinator, and New England offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo will now assume that position for the Raiders.

Also, former Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will be hired as a senior defensive assistant by McDaniels. Ryan, who coached the Ravens’ linebackers this season, led the Raiders’ defense from 2004 to 2008.

The 33-year-old Lombardi, whose father is longtime NFL executive Mike Lombardi, will be a coordinator for the first time. Mike Lombardi spent almost a decade as the Raiders’ senior personnel executive.

McDaniels is expected to call offensive plays.

Mick Lombardi has been an offensive assistant for the 49ers, Jets and Patriots, taking over as the assistant quarterbacks coach for New England in 2019. He has been the wide receivers coach for the past two seasons.

Bricillo, 45, was a longtime college assistant before joining the Patriots in 2019. He was the co-offensive line coach in 2020 and took on solo responsibilities this season.

Ryan, 59, coached with McDaniels in New England from 2000 to 2003 and has been the defensive coordinator in Dallas, Cleveland, Buffalo and Washington in addition to the Raiders. It’s unclear if he will coach a specific position, but his experience as a longtime former coordinator will be an asset for new Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

Ryan is the son of the late coach Buddy Ryan, and his brother is former coach and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan.
