Raiders trade veteran defensive tackle in swap of draft picks

The Raiders sent defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins to the Cowboys as part of an exchange of draft picks Tuesday.

Dallas also will get a 2024 seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2023.

Hankins, 30, had been with the Raiders since 2018 and started all 60 games he played for the team in the past four seasons. He made one start this season and was a healthy scratch against the Chiefs.

Hankins played just 12 snaps Sunday against the Texans and has seen his snap count decrease for four straight games.

The move could open more playing time for rookie Neil Farrell Jr., who has started to see the field a bit more consistently in the past two games.

Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham declined comment on the trade, indicating he preferred to allow coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler to speak on personnel matters.

But Graham did say he has been pleased with the development of Farrell.

“The typical progression you see from rookies,” Graham said. “Learning how to study better, taking care of his body better, and then that shows up in practice because how we do it here is any snaps earned on the field is based on practice. So he’s had an emergence on the practice field, and when we talk about the idea of practice execution becoming game reality, that’s what we’re looking for.”

The move leaves 52 players on the active roster, so another transaction is likely.

A practice squad move also was made Tuesday, as the Raiders added offensive tackle Sebastian Gutierrez and released cornerback Javelin Guidry.

Gutierrez, who played at Minot State, was released from the Patriots’ practice squad last week. He has not played in an NFL game.

Guidry was active in four games for the Raiders this season, including against the Texans. He has played primarily on special teams.
