An unofficial poll of media members suggested that most felt one thing was going through Michael Phelps’ mind as Jason Lezak appeared too far back in the 4X100 freestyle relay: There goes my million bucks.
Phelps needed Lezak to pull off that comeback so he could stay on track for eight gold medals and win a $1 million bonus, and when you saw the U.S. star screaming and waving his hands and imploring Lezak to go faster, you wondered if his antics were more about individual than team, about his wallet and fame than anything else.
