THEY SAID IT

One of the better features at the MPC continues to be the daily quotes from selected coaches and athletes. I would love to cover some of these people on a daily basis. They’re completely out of their minds in the best way possible for those of us with tape recorders and laptops.
Here is a sampling from Monday:
“I never used drugs, but you would have to be on a huge trip to experience this.” — track athlete Marcel van der Westen of the Netherlands on the atmosphere inside the Bird’s Nest.
“When the score was 12-9 in the second set, I cleaned my glasses, and when I put them back on the first thing I saw was the Georgian flag. I thought it was a sign and I remembered the movie, “Rocky,” so the first thing I did after we won was reach for the Georgian flag.” — beach volleyball player Jorge Terceiro of Georgia on his best Sylvester Stallone impersonation.
“I cannot run faster. I am so sorry for myself.” — field hockey player Mayumi Ono of Japan following her team’s 1-0 loss to Germany.
What this all means: UNLV’s Lon Kruger doesn’t have a future as an Olympic athlete from Europe or Asia.
