Frierson’s homer lifts UNLV baseball to win
Jarred Frierson hit a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday, lifting the UNLV baseball team over Texas Christian 7-6 at Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels (11-13, 3-2 Mountain West Conference) trailed 6-2 before rallying for three runs in the seventh inning and another in the eighth.
Xavier Scruggs doubled for UNLV to open the seventh ining, and Rance Roundy followed with a single that put Scruggs at third base. Scruggs then scored on a balk, and Roundy later scored with the bases loaded when Ryan Thornton got hit by a pitch.
Frierson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Braden Walker and make it 6-5.
In the eighth, a Roundy sacrifice fly brought J.J. Sferra in with the tying run.
• UNLV MEN’S SWIMMING — At Federal Way, Wash., Jonas Andersson took 28th in the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championships, and Johan Claar was 29th in the 1,650 freestyle.
Arizona won the national title, finishing with 500.5 points. Texas was second at 406.
• UNLV WOMEN’S TENNIS — At Provo, Utah, the 62nd-ranked Rebels beat Brigham Young 4-0 to end a four-match losing streak.
UNLV (9-7, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) took the doubles point, winning both completed matches, then got singles victories from Elena Gantcheva at No. 1, Kristina Nedeltcheva at No. 2 and Anna Maskaljun at No. 4.
• UNLV MEN’S TENNIS — The Rebels lost to No. 31 Texas Christian 5-2 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
UNLV (8-9, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) got singles wins from David Campbell at No. 4 and Andrew Giuffrida at No. 6.
• UNLV TRACK AND FIELD — At Fresno, Calif., Charlotte Browning won the 800-meter run at the Cal-Nevada Championships, finishing in 2 minutes, 11.54 seconds.
Lauren Johnson was fifth in the 200 and eighth in the 100, and Monique Humphries was ninth in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 167 feet, 3 inches.
UNLV took fifth in the 4×100 relay.
• CSN BASEBALL — The College of Southern Nevada turned five double plays on the day and swept a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader against College of Southern Idaho, 1-0 and 8-2 at Morse Stadium.
In the first game, Taylor Cole (7-2) pitched a three-hit shutout. Cole faced 22 batters, striking out seven and walking none on 80 pitches.
CSN (25-10, 14-6), ranked 18th, got its one run in the bottom of the third on a Kyle Bostick RBI double.
In the second game, Chase Bradford (2-0) struck out four, walked two and allowed no runs on five hits through 4 2/3 innings.
Robbie Garvey and Brandon Trodick both went 2-for-3, and Garvey had four RBIs.
• CSN SOFTBALL — At Grand Junction, Colo., the Coyotes split with Colorado Northwestern, losing 6-5 and winning 20-1.
In the opener, Colorado Northwestern (2-33, 1-23 Scenic West) scored two runs on errors in the bottom of the seventh to win.
In the second game, Mary Freiburger, Nikki Ortiz, Michelle Ralston and Lindsey Headley homered for the Coyotes (21-13, 16-8).
