Men’s golf in second entering final round of season opener
The UNLV men’s golf team, ranked 13th in the nation, was in second place Sunday after the first two rounds of the season-opening Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at Air Force Academy, Colo.
UNLV had a 4-under 572 total, five strokes behind Colorado. Blake Biddle led the Rebels with a 4-under 140 total, one stroke behind co-leaders Jason Burstyn of Colorado and Kyle Westmoreland of Air Force.
The Rebels’ A.J. McInerney was tied for eighth at 142 in the 16-team tournament, which concludes today with the final round.
■ WOMEN’S SOCCER - UNLV won its fourth straight game, beating Montana 3-1 at Johann Memorial Field to wrap up the Nike Invitational.
Macy Jo Harrison, Caitlin Allen and Jenn Wolfe scored for the Rebels (5-2-1), with Allen’s header off a Harrison corner kick proving to be the game winner in the 15th minute.
■ MEN’S SOCCER - UNLV lost to UC Riverside 4-3 in double overtime at Johann Memorial Field.
UNLV took a 3-2 lead on Rodrigo Fuentes’ goal in the 87th minute, but an unlucky bounce in the final minute of regulation led to a handball call on UNLV in the goal box. The Highlanders’ Jose Diaz converted the penalty kick to tie it at 3 and force overtime.
Aaron Long scored the game winner for UC Riverside in the 101st minute
Jose Mendoza and Nick Marshall also scored for the Rebels (1-4-1).
■ CROSS COUNTRY - At Sparks, UNLV took fourth among four teams in the Nevada Twilight Classic on Saturday in Sparks. Brigham Young won the meet with 24 points, placing all five of its scoring runners in the top eight. Host UNR took second with 38 points, paced by Samantha Diaz, who won the 4-kilometer race in 14 minutes, 32 seconds.
Utah was third with 83, followed by UNLV with 102. Laura Affeld led the Rebels, taking 17th in 15:34 in the field of 37.
