San Diego ousts UNLV women in NCAA tennis
The UNLV women’s tennis team lost to 29th-ranked San Diego 4-2 in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The 39th-ranked Rebels (20-6) were playing in the NCAA Championships for the fifth straight year.
San Diego won two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0, then clinched the victory with three singles wins.
Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun won at No. 2 doubles for UNLV, their school-record 19th straight victory, and Aleksandra Josifoska (No. 2) and Anna Maskaljun (No. 6) claimed singles wins. Maskaljun won 21 of her final 22 matches and led the team with a 28-5 record.
■ UNLV TRACK — At Fort Collins, Colo., the Rebels took fifth in the women’s Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
UNLV finished with 82 points. Brigham Young won with 191, followed by New Mexico (129), Texas Christian (98) and San Diego State (87½).
Rebels junior Amanda Bingson, who won the hammer throw Friday, was named the meet’s outstanding performer.
On Saturday, Emily Blok ran the anchor leg on UNLV’s winning 400-meter relay team (45.09 seconds) and took second in the 100 (11.58) and 200 (23.83). Zadia Bryant, Davina Collins and Secoral Yanez also ran on the victorious relay.
Kelsey Williamson was fourth in the 400 (54.65), and the 1,600 relay team finished fourth (3:41.31).
■ UNLV BASEBALL — At Air Force Academy, Colo., the Falcons scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Rebels, 7-6.
Scott Dysinger, Ryan Scott, Rance Roundy and Danny Higa had two hits apiece for UNLV (31-20, 8-11 MWC), and Higa and Brandon Bayardi each drove in two runs.
The Rebels scored four runs in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and tied the game with a run in the ninth.
■ UNLV SOFTBALL — Tayler Aleman hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to break a tie and give the Rebels an 11-7 victory over Colorado State at Eller Media Stadium in their regular-season finale.
The victory was the fifth straight for UNLV (27-18, 9-5 MWC).
Bri Bernardi belted a three-run homer in the second and Pauline Monreal a two-run shot in the third for the Rebels, who rallied from 4-0 and 7-3 deficits. Amanda Oliveto (21-10) pitched four innings of one-hit relief to get the victory.
■ CSN SOFTBALL — At Salt Lake City, the College of Southern Nevada lost to the College of Southern Idaho 9-4 in a losers’ bracket game in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 18 Softball Tournament.
The Coyotes (38-28), who set a school record for wins this season, fell behind 4-0 after two innings and 8-3 after four.
A.J. Woodward went 2-for-2 with a home run, her 28th, and two RBIs for CSN. Alicia Firelein was 2-for-4.
