Titans erupt late, beat Rebels, 11-5

Cal State Fullerton erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday night — highlighted by Jon Wilhite’s two-run double — as the 23rd-ranked Titans beat UNLV 11-5 in a nonconference baseball game in Fullerton, Calif.

Joel Weeks and Jeff Newman delivered run-scoring singles and Josh Fellhauer added an RBI triple in the inning as Cal State Fullerton improved to 11-8.

UNLV dropped to 9-10 with its second straight loss to the Titans.

Michael Brenly went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to pace UNLV, which led 3-2 before the Titans erupted.

Cal State Fullerton added four runs in the eighth to put the game away.

Starter Thomas Whitsett (2-1) took the loss for UNLV.

SOFTBALL — The Rebels dropped a pair of games in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., falling 2-1 to No. 14 DePaul after being shut out by Louisiana-Lafayette, 1-0.

DePaul (18-9) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. The Rebels (19-18-1) scored on a solo home run in the fourth by Rosa Ordaz.

In the first game, Ashley Brignac of Louisiana-Lafayette threw a five-inning no-hitter to beat the Rebels.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING — Senior Kim Bonney placed 42nd in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1 minute, 4.06 seconds on the second day of the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

Bonney, who was 52nd in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday, will swim the 200 breaststroke today on the final day of the national meet.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA

BASEBALL — Tyler Lavigne pitched a one-hitter in the nightcap as the 18th-ranked Coyotes blanked No. 16 Salt Lake Community College 9-0 to salvage a split of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake Community College won the first game 15-11.

Lavigne (3-0) had a no-hitter going in the bottom of the ninth when it was broken up by a single. He retired 22 consecutive batters from the second inning to the ninth and finished with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

In the first game, Robbie Garvey went 3-for-4 with seven RBIs as CSN (21-8, 10-4 SWAC) and Salt Lake (20-7, 12-2) combined for 17 walks and five hit batsmen in a seven-inning game that lasted nearly three hours.

The Coyotes’ Braeden Schlehuber hit solo homers in each game.

SOFTBALL — The Coyotes (18-10, 13-5) split a Scenic West doubleheader with Salt Lake Community College (20-6, 12-4) on the road, winning 3-2 and losing 4-0.

In the second game, the Coyotes’ Michelle Ralston had two RBIs, Christina Jones picked up the victory and Mandy Tapia earned the save.
