UNLV men’s golf takes lead in Golfweek tournament

The UNLV men’s golf team took the first-round lead Sunday at the Ping/Golfweek Preview Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga., in a tournament featuring 14 of the nation’s top 25 teams.

UNLV, ranked 13th, shot 1-over 281, with UCLA one shot back in second, and New Mexico, Georgia Tech and San Diego State tied for third at 287.

Kurt Kitayama paced the Rebels, shooting 2-under 68 to stand tied for second, one stroke behind the Aztecs’ Tom Berry. UNLV’s Blake Biddle, AJ McInerney and Kevin Penner were tied for 11th at 71.

The 15-team event continues today and Tuesday.

■ WOMEN’S SOCCER – UNLV beat Idaho 1-0 at Johann Memorial Field for its school-record seventh straight victory. The Rebels (8-2-1) have already matched last year’s win total.

UNLV outshot the Vandals 21-7, including seven shots on goal. Denali Murnan got credit for the game’s lone goal, on a shot she back-heeled that was then kicked by an Idaho defender and deflected into the net off goalie Liz Boyden.

Idaho got just one shot on goal as Rebels goalkeeper Kylie Wassell notched her fourth shutout of the season.

■ MEN’S SOCCER – At Sacramento, Calif., UNLV lost to Sacramento State 3-2 in overtime.

The Rebels (2-7-1) led 2-1 after goals from Julian Portugal in the 38th minute and Salvador Bernal in the 59th minute. But the Hornets tied it less than a minute later and ultimately won on Isaac Ikyurav’s goal in the 95th minute.

■ WOMEN’S TENNIS – Iren Kotseva won Flight Three in the UNLV Fall Invitational, giving the Rebels champions or co-champions in three of four flights. Kotseva won when Auburn’s Plamena Kurteva retired after the two split the first two sets.

Lucia Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska shared the Flight One title, and Anett Ferenczi-Bako and Ella Bourchier shared the Flight Four title.
