UNLV softball tumbles again
The UNLV softball team lost to Long Beach State 5-2 Saturday at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., the Rebels’ sixth straight setback.
UNLV (19-19-1) broke open a scoreless game on Jaci Hull’s two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning. But the Rebels gave away the lead as quickly as they grabbed it, allowing five runs — including a grand slam — in the bottom of the sixth.
After a solid first five innings, UNLV starter Stephanie Bregante struggled with the 2-0 lead. A walk loaded the bases, and Bregante then hit Brooke LeSage to bring in a run. Danielle Linke followed with her grand slam to give the 49ers the lead.
The Rebels went down in order in the seventh inning to end the game.
Brittany Bolinger went 2-for-3 for UNLV, and Brittany Meade and Alyssia De La Torre each had one hit.
Bridgette Pagano got the complete-game win, allowing five hits and striking out two with no walks.
• UNLV BASEBALL — At Fullerton, Calif., the Rebels couldn’t keep No. 23 Cal State Fullerton from a three-game sweep, losing 4-3 to close out the nonconference series.
The Rebels quickly came back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit with three runs in the top of the second inning. Braden Walker hit a two-run homer, and J.J. Sferra’s RBI single tied the game.
UNLV, though, walked in the Titans’ winning run with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
Ryan Thornton went 2-for-3 with a run for UNLV, and Xavier Scruggs was 2-for-4 with a run.
• UNLV SWIMMING — At Columbus, Ohio, Kim Bonney wrapped up her three-event stint at the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships, falling short of advancing out of the preliminaries.
Bonney clocked 2 minutes, 15.10 seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke, taking 28th in the prelims.
• CSN BASEBALL — At Salt Lake City, Brandon Trodick hit a grand slam, and Taylor Cole struck out 10 as No. 18 College of Southern Nevada beat No. 16 Salt Lake Community College 5-2 in the second game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Salt Lake (21-8, 13-3) limited CSN (22-9, 11-5) to two hits in winning 2-1 in the first game.
In the second game, Cole (6-2) gave up one earned run and allowed six hits with three walks.
Trodick’s blast to left-center field came in the fifth inning. He finished 2-for-4, and Braeden Schlehuber scored two runs, after driving in CSN’s run in the opener.
• CSN SOFTBALL — At Salt Lake City, eighth-ranked Salt Lake (22-6, 14-4) swept CSN (18-12, 13-6), 5-1 and 4-3.
CSN’s Nikki Ortiz hit a solo homer in the fourth inning of the opener.
