UNLV women struggle in opening round of MW golf championships
Despite star junior Dana Finkelstein’s 1-over-par 73 and senior Demi Mak’s 2-over 74, UNLV struggled in the opening round of the Mountain West women’s golf championships Thursday at Rancho Mirage, Calif. The Rebels came in at 15-over 303, 10 shots behind first-round leader San Diego State.
Finkelstein overcame two early bogeys in her round to make the turn at even par at Mission Hills Country Club’s Dinah Shore Championship Course. But she made bogey at the par-5, 496-yard No. 11 and was unable to get that shot back. Mak was even through 14 holes but made a bogey at the par-4, 351-yard 15th, then finished her round with a bogey at the par-5, 521-yard No. 18. The other UNLV scores that counted toward the team total were freshman Avery French’s 5-over 77 and junior Mayko Chwen Wang’s 7-over 79.
The Aztecs hold a one-shot lead over San Jose State, which had a team-total of 6-over 294 and the Aztecs are two shots in front of third-place New Mexico as the Lobos finished at 295. Boise State and Fresno State are tied for fourth heading into today’s second round at 296.
