Lady Rebels suffer tough home loss
The UNLV women’s basketball team was dealt a stunning last-second loss Sunday, falling to Loyola Marymount 61-59 at the Thomas & Mack Center.
UNLV’s Sequoia Holmes tied the game at 59 on a short jumper with 5.7 seconds left. But the Lions’ Amanda DeCoud then drove the length of the court for a game-winning layup as the buzzer sounded.
Loyola Marymount (1-1) led by nine at halftime and still had an eight-point edge with less than 14 minutes remaining before the Lady Rebels began chipping away. Dominique Harris hit a 3-pointer to start a 10-2 UNLV run, capped by a Holmes layup to tie it at 44 with 9:44 remaining.
The Lady Rebels (1-1) gained a 57-54 lead with 3:31 left, off five straight points from Shannon Oberg and another Holmes layup.
But the Lions tied it on a Lisa Helmers 3-pointer, then went up 59-57 on a Cassady Moore layup with 44 seconds left.
Holmes finished with a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds. Brittany Halberg had 11 points and five assists for UNLV.
The Lady Rebels shot just 34.5 percent, despite going 6 of 12 from 3-point range. They were outrebounded 50-39 and had 19 turnovers.
Moore led Loyola Marymount with 12 points.
UNLV next hosts Texas Tech at 7 p.m. Saturday.
