Clayton could snap several school marks

Sophomore quarterback Omar Clayton already has placed himself in UNLV’s record book with his ongoing streak of 139 passes without an interception.

He could enter his name a few more times before the season ends.

Clayton is on pace to have one of the best years in school history.

Entering Saturday’s 7 p.m. game against UNR at Sam Boyd Stadium, Clayton’s nine touchdown passes already are the most since Kurt Nantkes tossed 12 in 2003. At his current pace, Clayton would finish with 27 TD passes, which would break Jon Denton’s record of 25 set in 1996.

Clayton has thrown for 777 yards, which would equate to 2,331 if he remains on his current pace. That would be the most since Denton’s 2,586 in 1997 and would stand eighth all time.

And Clayton has completed 63.1 percent of his passes, which would break Randall Cunningham’s mark of 62.4 established in 1984. Clayton’s 61.1 completion percentage last season is second to Cunningham’s.

Not that anyone expects Clayton to go an entire season with an interception, but he could best Chad Reed’s three picks in 1998 based on a minimum of 100 attempts.

Clayton said statistics were something he could think about after the season.

“The biggest thing for me this season is getting better on a week-to-week basis,” he said. “Sometimes I forget that I’m still a young quarterback, and I still have a lot to learn. I just want to be solid every single week. The best way for me to do that is just to forget what I’ve done in the past and focus on what I’m doing this week.”

• DENTED TANK — Tailback Frank Summers bruised his left knee Wednesday and sat out the rest of practice for precautionary reasons. Coach Mike Sanford said he didn’t think the injury was serious.

Summers wore a T-shirt after Tuesday’s practice that on the front read: “HOW TOUGH IS FRANK SUMMERS?” The back read: “CHUCK NORRIS WON’T TACKLE HIM.”

A fan made the shirt.

“I thought it was really nice, and it motivated me a little bit,” Summers said.

• NO SELLOUT YET — There still is time to buy tickets for Saturday’s game.

“Tickets sales (are) going real well, but plenty of good seats are still available,” athletic director Mike Hamrick said.

No figure was released on the number of tickets sold.

Fans won’t be the only ones in attendance. Seven NFL clubs requested credentials.

• LUNCHEON CHANGE — Friday’s noon booster luncheon will move to the Board Room at the Thomas & Mack Center because a larger-than-usual crowd is expected.
