Abandoned newborn found in LA with umbilical cord still attached

Los Angeles police on Wednesday were still searching for the mother of a newborn baby who was abandoned on a sidewalk in a dirty stroller with his umbilical cord still attached.

The boy, believed to be 1 day old,  was found about 1 p.m. in south L.A., police told KTLA. The neighborhood, Adams-Normandie, is about half of a mile from the University of Southern California campus.

The infant was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition on Wednesday morning.

“We are asking the public’s help to identify the mother — to make sure the mom is safe and why the baby was left here,” Los Angeles Police Department spokesman Sean Parker said.

The newborn was discovered by a passer-by, who said he found the infant wearing brand new pajamas and sweating, KTLA reported.

California’s safe surrender laws allow the mother to give up a newborn to a fire station up to three days after birth without legal repercussion.
