Fire ants create floating rafts in South Carolina floods — VIDEO

Photographers working in flood-ravaged South Carolina have started sharing videos and pictures of what appears to be mounds of floating fire ants.

In Dorchester County, WSAV photojournalist Chris Murray recorded the mounds as it floated in flood water Tuesday morning.

According to livescience, fire ant colonies will mass together in under 100 seconds as means of emergency escape. Since the ant’s exoskeleton is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water, the group has as enhanced water-repellent ability.

Flooding in South Carolina has killed 15 people since heavy rains started falling last week.
