I got shot down for a Valentine’s Day date. Feels bad, man. But then I remembered that the region basketball tournaments start Tuesday, and my heart was filled with joy again.

Seven-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman and Liberty meet Saturday at Sam Boyd Stadium in a rematch of last year’s Division I (now Class 4A) state title game that Gorman won 62-21.
Four teams — Arbor View, Bishop Gorman, Damonte Ranch and Liberty — get to practice in the morning and then stuff their bellies with turkey, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie before the Class 4A state semifinals.
Three title games involving Southern Nevada teams are on the docket. Basic and Liberty meet in the Class 4A Sunrise Region title game Friday for the third straight season, and the Class 3A and Class 1A finals are Saturday afternoon.

This is the final week of the regular season in the Class 4A Sunset Region, and the playoff picture looks like my 4-year-old cousin’s finger-painting. It’s a complete mess.

Maybe Bishop Gorman didn’t play the best team in California, or the best team in Florida, or the best team in Texas. But the Gaels played more good teams than anybody else, and that’s all that matters when it comes to prep football rankings.
It’s the unofficial halfway point of the prep football season, and that means it’s time to give out the Fieldies.
Sure enough, league play in the Class 4A Sunset Region and Class 3A starts this week, the true indicator that summer is done. Even Bishop Gorman is taking a break from irking out-of-state fanbases to play a Southwest League contest against Bonanza. (I didn’t include that game in my picks, but, spoiler alert, Gorman is going to win.)
The unofficial Clark County School District football title game takes place when Desert Pines visits six-time defending Sunrise Region champion Liberty at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The time difference here in Hawaii has me all goofed up, which explains why I went with so many double-digit point predictions. Fielder thinks I got too much sun at Hanauma Bay. He’s probably right.
There’s been a lot of talk in the news lately about borders and walls. It’s probably because of the way prep football schedules continue to spread across state lines.
