Classic VW Beetle gets retro-redesign for 2017

The Volkswagen Beetle is a classic model from the German car builder that introduced the vehicle in 1938. It arrived in the U.S. in 1947 and became an icon in the 1960s. Still a treasured part of the company’s inventory, the Beetle is one of the most popular vehicles in the world and certainly at Findlay Volkswagen in the Valley Automall.

The 2017 VW Beetle has everything going for it, ranging from its newly refreshed exterior design to a choice of automatic or stick-shift transmission. The Beetle comes with a peppy 1.8-liter four-cylinder power plant generating 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.

The Beetle’s gas mileage is 24 city and 33 highway.

Three trim levels include the S, SE and SEL. The SEL also is available with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder tuned to provide 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque.

With the availability of a hard top or convertible, the 2017 VW Beetle is not only economical but fun to drive. Refreshed and ready to go, the retro-redesigned Beetle has been a hit since being introduced during the Beetle Sunshine Tour in Germany earlier this year.

Martin Norris, a 29-year resident of Las Vegas and a 23-year employee of Findlay Automotive Group, has been with the company nearly long enough to be termed a classic (in Nevada, automobiles may be defined as “classics” once they reach 25 years of age).

He has good things to say about the classic Beetle.

“People who have purchased Beetles in the past are the same people who are buying them nowadays,” said Norris, the dealership’s special finance director. “Like good wine, the Beetle gets better with age.”

Norris said the 2017 VW Beetle has a certain mystique about it.

“The car is timeless,” he said. “It’s definitely a classic.” The redesign of this model is a mix of the iconic design of the 1960s Beetle with the more contemporary design of the 1998 revamp.

“Any time you change a car after so many years, you’re taking a chance, but Volkswagen has done a great job keeping with the times.”

Situated at 983 Auto Show Drive in the Valley Automall, Findlay Volkswagen is spearheaded by General Manager Doug Fleming, who serves in the same capacity at Findlay North Volkswagen in the northwest valley.

Both dealerships are part of Findlay Automotive Group founded in 1961 by the late Pete Findlay, whose son, Cliff, now leads 28 automobile dealerships in Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Arizona and Idaho.
