Woman dies after vehicle strikes her near Las Vegas sign

Updated February 18, 2018 - 4:53 pm

Las Vegas police arrested a 39-year-old man early Sunday after a woman was killed when a car backed into her near the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

Around 9:19 p.m. Saturday, John Treese and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument inside of a Honda Odyssey because she wanted to drive, according to a Metropolitan Police Department news release.

During the argument, the woman got out of the car and began to walk on the median at the intersection of Russell Road and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Witnesses saw the Honda drive backward and accelerate as it drove onto the median, striking the woman, police said.

Once it reached the opposite side of the street, the car stopped.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Clark County coroner’s office will release her identity, as well as determine her cause and manner of death.

Treese was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he faces one count of open murder.
