Bulldogs’ Wyke tosses five-inning no-hitter

Centennial baseball coach Charlie Cerrone wasn’t sure his team was ready Monday for its game against Legacy.

Jordon Wyke made sure everything turned out fine for the Bulldogs.

Wyke fired a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts, and Centennial beat the visiting Longhorns 10-0 in five innings.

“I didn’t feel too comfortable about our guys today,” Cerrone said. “But they came out and didn’t have to do too much.”

Wyke allowed two baserunners. He hit Hayden LeCates to lead off the second and walked Donta Williams with two outs in the third. The senior right-hander said he never had thrown a no-hitter before at any level.

“It feels great,” Wyke said. “It’s an honor to do it here. I mean, I love this team. I wanted to keep us in the game to win it and get as many ground balls as I can.”

Wyke didn’t get many ground balls, mostly because Legacy batters had trouble catching up to his fastball all game.

“I felt like it was getting on them quick,” Wyke said.

Wyke threw 62 pitches, 46 for strikes. He threw first-pitch strikes to 14 of the 17 batters he faced.

“He came out aggressive and attacked the strike zone,” Cerrone said. “Our pitching coach dropped him down on the side during winter league, and that seems to be working real good for him. He’s a little more accurate, and his ball moves a little more.”

The Bulldogs (5-2) scored in every inning, plating two runs in each of the first three frames to go ahead 6-0. They added three runs in the fourth and ended the game by the 10-run rule in the fifth when Jared Drizin walked with the bases loaded and two outs.

Wyke said he was ready to continue if the team hadn’t scored the 10th run.

“I was ready to go back out and put another zero on the board,” Wyke said. “Another shut-down inning.”

Zach Dixon was 3-for-4 with a double, two triples, three runs and two RBIs to lead Centennial’s offense. Dixon raised his season average to .600.

“When he gets an opportunity to hit, he’s been swinging well his entire career here,” Cerrone said.

Travis Stevens drove in two runs, and Tanner Wright had a triple and scored three runs for the Bulldogs. Centennial had only seven hits, but four were triples and two were doubles.

“We’re starting to look really good,” Wyke said. “We’re coming together as a team, and it’s going to be a good season.”
