Excessive heat warning for Las Vegas Valley this week
This week in the Las Vegas Valley is expected to be the hottest of the year.
Monday’s high reached the average for this time of year at 97 degrees, but temperatures will jump from there, the National Weather Service said.
Also according to the weather service:
An excessive heat warning is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday until 8 p.m. Wednesday, when the valley will see respective highs of 105 and 107.
A 104-degree high is forecast Thursday, followed by a high of 102 on Friday. Thursday should see breezy winds between 10 and 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
Overnight lows this week will be in the high 70s to low 80s.
The Las Vegas Fire Department is warning the public of increased chances of fire or medical emergencies.
“The excessive heat can cause injury and illness because most people are not acclimated to the heat,” the department said Monday. “It can also increase the chance of fires in homes and businesses.”
The department released the following tips:
— Extension cords, which can cause fires, should not be used with refrigerators or air-conditioning units. If they are running constantly and the extension cord is not designed to carry the required electrical load, the cord could cause a fire.
— Chemicals left exposed to direct sunlight in extreme heat can cause a fire, including paint, paint thinners and fuel.
— Check air conditioners and fans for any frayed wires and keep them clean, as fans accumulate dust and dirt around the motor.
— Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, as temperatures can quickly rise to 135 degrees inside it.
— Drink plenty of fluids.
— Use sunblock and make sure your skin is covered with light clothing.
— Take frequent breaks in a cool place when working outside.
