Suspect arrested in sexual assault at northwest Las Vegas park

Updated June 22, 2019 - 9:51 pm

Las Vegas police on Saturday arrested a 59-year-old man suspected of sexually assaulting a female jogger after her run through a northwest park on Thursday.

The attack was reported just before 10:55 a.m. Thursday at W. Wayne Bunker Family Park, 7351 W. Alexander Road. The victim had finished her run through the park and was pushed to the ground by a man, who then threatened her with a box cutter and sexually assaulted her, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

Officers arrested Ortez Winfrey about 10:20 a.m. Saturday on the 7800 block of Alta Drive, near South Buffalo Drive, police said.

Winfrey remained in the Clark County Detention Center on a $40,000 bail Saturday, and faces charges of sexual assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree kidnapping with a deadly weapon, battery to commit sexual assault on a victim 16 or older, and robbery with a deadly weapon, jail records show.

Detectives continued to investigate the assault on Saturday, police said.

The victim had driven to the park to go for a run, and while jogging she saw a man holding a drill and wearing a “construction type reflective vest,” police said Friday. The man then attacked her as she walked back to her car.
