Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.

BASEBALL

Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday — Centennial vs. Cimarron-Memorial

Cimarron currently sits third in the Northwest League, but runs into the league leading Bulldogs in a three-game Northwest League series. The teams play at Cimarron on Tuesday, and at Centennial Wednesday and Friday.

Tuesday — Silverado at Las Vegas, 3:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks and Wildcats are jockeying for position in the playoff race. Silverado currently holds the Sunrise League’s No. 7 playoff seed, while the Wildcats are eighth in the league.

Thursday — Foothill at Green Valley, 3:30 p.m.

The Falcons have been a surprise in the Sunrise League behind the pitching of Andrew Hauck, and currently sit in third place at 6-2. Green Valley has rebounded after a slow start, and the Gators are 6-3 in the league.

SOFTBALL

Tuesday — Foothill at Basic, 3:30 p.m.

Two teams sitting near the top of the Sunrise League standings square off in what could be a preview of a postseason matchup.

Wednesday — Bishop Manogue at Shadow Ridge (2), noon

The Mustangs have punished softballs all season against Southern Nevada opponents, and get a peak of what the North has to offer when Reno’s biggest private school comes to town for a doubleheader.

Saturday — Liberty at Silverado, 10 a.m.

Capping quite the week in Sunrise League play, the Skyhawks want to show that they are a legit contender. The Patriots have been an enigma, going 2-3 outside of league, but 5-1 in league play.

Saturday — Coronado at Desert Oasis, 10 a.m.

Two teams with a break in league action, the Cougars travel across the I-15 to take on the slugging Diamondbacks in the kind of fun match-up that doesn’t happen often once league play gets underway.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Saturday — Green Valley vs. Foothill at Municipal, 9:45 a.m.

The Gators and Falcons represent two of the top teams in the Sunrise League and they square off in a dual meet.

TRACK AND FIELD

Friday-Saturday — Las Vegas Track Classic at Desert Oasis

One of the season’s biggest local meets currently has 29 teams entered. Action begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday with freshman and sophomore events and the boys and girls varsity 5K run. The rest of the varsity events start at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Defending champions Bishop Gorman (boys) and Green Valley (girls) are among the teams entered along with perennial power Centennial.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday — Palo Verde at Cimarron-Memorial, 6 p.m.

The Panthers (18-4, 3-1) are riding high in the Sunset League, and will travel take on the league-leading Spartans (11-6, 4-0).

Coronado girls down Gorman for 5A volleyball region title

The Coronado girls volleyball team swept Bishop Gorman to win the Class 5A Southern Region final Saturday at Palo Verde. Both teams advance to the state tournament.

Arbor View, Desert Pines ready to challenge Liberty, Gorman

Arbor View and Desert Pines are embracing the opportunities they have against Liberty and Bishop Gorman, respectively, in Friday’s Class 5A Southern Region semifinals.

Coronado, Palo Verde celebrate 5A golf, tennis titles

Coronado set a state record with its score of 11-under at the Class 5A girls golf state championship. In tennis, Palo Verde swept the boys and girls 5A championships.
