Roundup: Haley Tyrell helps Coronado go 2-0 in Liberty Invitational

Coronado senior Haley Tyrell has done most — if not all — of the heavy lifting for the Cougars girls basketball team the past three seasons.

“Last year she had to do everything,” Coronado coach Rich Santigate said. “The supporting cast just wasn’t there.”

Not anymore.

Despite missing three post players, the Cougars turned in a full team effort on Friday in their 62-16 win over Valley in the Liberty Invitational.

Coronado went 2-0 on the day after routing Silverado earlier in pool play.

In the second game, Tyrell had 11 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and five steals, and led three Cougars in double-figures. Coronado dominated on the perimeter on both ends, and used its suffocating defense to build a 21-4 lead after the first quarter en route to the victory.

“We have that type of team,” Santigate said of being guard-oriented. “But this team has all the pieces to be successful — the guards, nice-sized post players. It’s going to be interesting.”

Santigate said he was down three post players because of previous “holiday commitments.”

The rest of the team picked up the slack, and took a 37-9 into halftime.

“We played within our system and did the things we wanted to do,” Santigate said. “We just played good defense. It’s a good start to the season. The goals are a little loftier this year. We want to get one of those top two seeds in our (region). It’s kind of a breakthrough year for us. Our program is moving in the right direction. … Everything’s on the rise.”

Coronado’s Haley Morton led all scorers with 13 points, and Sade Williams chipped in 11 points for the Cougars.

Debra Schuster led Valley (0-2) with six points.

Coronado 45, Silverado 13 — Tyrell had 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists and five steals to lead the Cougars past the Skyhawks.

Williams added seven points for Coronado, which led 30-7 at halftime after holding Silverado scoreless in the second quarter.

Jasmine Waugh led Silverado with six points.

Liberty 73, Faith Lutheran 38 — Rae Burrell led four double-figure scorers with 18 points in the Patriots’ dominating win over the Crusaders.

Dre’una Edwards had 14 points, London Pavlica had 12 points and Starr Walker scored 11 for Liberty, which also got eight points from Leilana Padilla.

Kayla Proctor had 10 points for Faith Lutheran.

Liberty 80, Cheyenne 42 — Burrell and Pavlica each scored 22 points to help the Patriots rout the Desert Shields.

Edwards added 15 points for Liberty, which led 35-23 at halftime.

Germanie White and Teionni McDaniel had 12 points apiece for Cheyenne.

Centennial JV 65, Palo Verde 37 — Aaliyah Ibarra had 13 points, and Bryar Tronnier scored 12 to help the Bulldogs top the Panthers.

Ariana Davis led Palo Verde with 12 points.

Faith Lutheran 66, Las Vegas 22 — Madison Bocobo led a balanced attack with 11 points in the Crusaders’ win over the Wildcats.

Kelsey Howryla had nine points, Zoe O’Sullivan had eight points and Kendall Larson and Skye Chapman-Landaz each scored seven for Faith Lutheran.

Alexiz Jenkins scored eight points for Las Vegas.

Arbor View 76, Las Vegas 22 — Alaysia Reed scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Aggies past the Wildcats.

Allie Hein added 12 points, and Janessa Adams scored nine for Arbor View, which led 27-10 after the first quarter.

Arianna Pinelo led Las Vegas with seven points.

Arbor View 49, Cheyenne 34 — Reed had 17 points to lead all scorers as the Aggies defeated the Desert Shields.

Kylan Hernandez added seven points for Arbor View.

White and McDaniel paced Cheyenne with eight points apiece.

Centennial JV 49, Silverado 20 — Kayln Miller had 14 points, and Cypree Stevens scored 10 as the Bulldogs routed the Skyhawks.

Jessica Guzman and Cailyn Savage each scored four points for Silverado.

Palo Verde 62, Valley 32 — Maya Bega scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Panthers by the Vikings.

Davis added 13 points, and Kedrena Johnson scored nine for Palo Verde.

Jeuzel Pollins had 11 points, and Lauryn Shockley scored 10 for Valley.

Vegas Valley Invitational

Cimarron-Memorial 52, Canyon Springs 49 — At American Heritage Academy, Tasia Moore led three double-figure scorers with 15 points as the Spartans edged the Pioneers in the Vegas Valley Invitational.

Elise Young added 12 points, and Syme’re Shelton scored 10 for Cimarron, which led 27-19 at the half.

Cimarron-Memorial 49, Desert Pines 12 — At American Heritage Academy, Tasia Moore had 19 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans dominated the Jaguars.

Mary Jane Williams Law added 11 points, and Chynna Torrence scored 10 for Cimarron, which outscored Desert Pines 24-2 in the second half.

Rancho 43, Bonanza 10 — At American Heritage Academy, Lea Williams scored 18 points as the Rams rolled past the Bengals.

Kyndal Ricks added 11 points for Rancho.

Madeline Gonzalez scored six to lead Bonanza.

Rancho 48, Chaparral 20 — At American Heritage Academy, Ricks scored 16 points as the Rams routed the Cowboys.

Williams added 13 points for the Rams.
