September 24, 2017 - 3:16 pm
Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sports events.
FOOTBALL
Thursday — Liberty at Green Valley, 7 p.m.
Both teams are coming off a bye, so they won’t suffer the short week of preparation that teams that played on Saturday will. This should be one of the bigger Southeast League challenges for the Patriots.
Thursday — Sunrise Mountain at Mojave, 7 p.m.
The Sunset League opener for a pair of Class 3A teams that suddenly look like contenders. The winner of this one should have the inside track to a home game in the first round of the playoffs.
Thursday — Faith Lutheran at Legacy, 7 p.m.
Faith Lutheran finally got its first win on Saturday after an 0-3 start, and will look to keep things going against Legacy. The Longhorns are coming off a win over Centennial, and have looked like one of the Northwest’s top teams.
GIRLS GOLF
Wednesday — Southwest League match at Angel Park, 11 a.m.
As a freshman, Clark’s Riana Mission has been one of the state’s best early on this season. Will she keep it going in this seven-team match?
BOYS SOCCER
Monday — Eldorado at Las Vegas, 3 p.m.
Freshman Sergio Aguayo is third in Southern Nevada in goals, and he’ll help the No. 4 Wildcats start league play against the one-loss Sundevils.
Wednesday — Western at Sunrise Mountain, 3 p.m.
The only two ranked Class 3A teams meet for the first of two meetings in the regular season when the No. 8 Miners host the No. 5 Warriors. Both squads are still undefeated.
GIRLS SOCCER
Monday — Arbor View at Palo Verde, 3:30 p.m.
The five-time defending state champions are ranked fourth in the coaches poll, and will clash with the No. 3 Panthers in one of the best Northwest League matches of the year.
Thursday — Coronado at Green Valley, 6 p.m.
It’s been tough to slow down the No. 2 Cougars, but the No. 6 Gators will have a chance under the lights at home.
BOYS TENNIS
Monday — Silverado at Foothill, 3 p.m.
Foothill will square off against Silverado in a key Class 4A Sunrise League matchup. The Falcons are 7-0 in league play, while the Skyhawks sport a 6-2 league mark.
GIRLS TENNIS
Monday — Palo Verde at Faith Lutheran, 3 p.m.
Palo Verde will look to preserve its unbeaten record against fellow Sunset League contender Faith Lutheran. The Panthers are 10-0, while the Crusaders are 11-2.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Monday — Legacy at Palo Verde, 6 p.m.
The Longhorns have been one of Southern Nevada’s most surprising teams this season. A win here over Palo Verde would lift Legacy into the upper echelon of Sunset Region teams.
Friday-Saturday — Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix
Bishop Gorman, Faith Lutheran, Rancho and Shadow Ridge will represent Southern Nevada in one of the country’s most prestigious volleyball tournaments.
