Bishop Gorman’s Broadus, son of Snoop Dogg, to sign with UCLA

Cordell Broadus bonded with his famous father through football.

Broadus threw an interesting twist into their gridiron relationship on Wednesday. Fo shizzle.

The senior wide receiver at Bishop Gorman and son of entertainment mogul Snoop Dogg signed a letter of intent with UCLA on national signing day, spurning crosstown rival — and his father’s favorite school — Southern California.

Broadus, who was the top uncommitted senior prospect in the area, made the announcement on ESPNU. His other finalists were Arizona State and Louisiana State.

“This is my life, and I feel like I should live it how I want to and make my own decision, because I’m at that age where I can make my own decision,” Broadus said following an afternoon signing ceremony at Gorman. “I’m trying to make my own name for myself, and I think that’s how you should live. You shouldn’t live for somebody else.”

Broadus’ recruitment was chronicled in the television series “Snoop & Son: A Dad’s Dream” that aired on ESPN this winter. His father is one of USC’s most recognizable fans and joked on the show that if his son chose another school, he’d attend games “with some USC drawers on.”

Snoop Dogg said Wednesday he was throwing away all his Trojans drawers.

“The most important thing is that he’s able to go get a college education, and he’s able to fulfill his dream and play football, whether it’s USC, UCLA. Wherever it is, we love him and we support him,” Snoop Dogg said. “And L.A. is L.A. It’s just a couple blocks down the street, so we’re going to support him and hoping he has a great time at UCLA.

“I love the coaching staff, the quarterback that’s coming in. I love the way it fit.”

The 6-foot-3-inch, 190-pound Broadus transfered to Gorman after his junior season at Diamond Bar (Calif.). He finished with 602 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns and was second on the Gaels in receptions with 39.

Broadus had two TD catches in a 70-28 victory over Reed in the Division I state final to help Gorman complete a 15-0 season and finish No. 1 in the USA Today Super 25 rankings. Last month, he participated in the Under Armour All-America High School Game.

Broadus is a four-star prospect according to all the major recruiting services, and he is ranked as the No. 130 prospect overall (No. 14 wide receiver) by ESPN.com. Rivals.com has Broadus as the No. 27 wide receiver nationally.

Broadus will join the son of another hip-hop icon at UCLA. Justin Combs, the son of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs, is a rising junior defensive back for the Bruins.

Broadus’ first scholarship offer as a ninth-grader came from UCLA, and he said one of the biggest factors in his decision to choose the Bruins was the team’s freshman quarterback.

“I got two words: Josh Rosen,” Broadus said of the former St. John Bosco (Calif.) standout who is ranked as one of the nation’s top prospects. “He’s been trying to get me to play with him since eighth grade, and he finally got me.”

Broadus was one of 12 local football players to sign with a Football Bowl Subdivision school on Wednesday, the first day recruits can make their commitments binding. He was one of six players from Gorman’s mythical national championship team to earn a scholarship at a FBS school.
