GOLF: Palo Verde takes opening-round lead at Pahrump Valley Invitational

Cole Wilczek carded a 4-under-par 68 at Mountain Falls on Thursday to help Palo Verde’s boys golf team take the lead at the midway point of the Pahrump Valley Invitational.

Jack Trent added a 72 for the Panthers, who are at 1-over 289 through the opening round. Bellarmine (Calif.) is second at 293, followed by Bellarmine’s junior varsity at 307. Harker (Calif.) is fourth at 311, and Desert Oasis fifth at 327.

Bellarmine’s Austin Murphy shot 69, and teammate Eddie Lai shot 70.

Pahrump’s Austen Ancell also shot 70.

Faith Lutheran tops Gorman

At Canyon Gate, Charlie Magruder shot 1-under 35 to help Faith Lutheran to a 188-205 win over Bishop Gorman.

Tyler Smerz, Jared Ramsay and Greg Price each added a 37 for the Crusaders.

The Gaels’ Mitchell Abbott was the medalist with a 32.
