SOFTBALL: Cougars unable to complete comeback, fall in championship game

Taylor Okamura homered in the seventh inning Saturday, but the Coronado softball team could not complete the comeback as the Cougars fell 3-1 to Rio Mesa (Calif.) in the championship of the National Tournament in Torrance, California.

Okamura finished 2-for-3 with a home run and a double.

Alicia Estrada pitched a complete game with 17 strikeouts for Rio Mesa.

Okamura, Tatum Spangler and Ashley Ward were Cougars named to the all-tournament team.

Coronado 3, Centennial 1 — At Torrance, California, Taylor Okamura went 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Cougars over the Bulldogs in the semifinals of the National Tournament.

Tatum Spangler threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts to pick up the win.

Skyler Ball was 1-for-2 with a double and scored Centennial’s run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Amanda Sink went the distance for the Bulldogs, allowing five hits and striking out 18.

Palo Verde 9, Carson 5 — At Torrance, California, Ally Snelling had three hits and two RBIs as the Panthers defeated the Colts in the National Tournament.

Grace Chavez added two hits, and Makena Martin had four RBIs for Palo Verde.

Palo Verde 4, Golden Valley (Calif.) 0 — At Torrance, California, Makena Martin had two hits and two RBIs as the Panthers beat the Grizzlies in the National Tournament.

Makall Whetten and Ally Snelling each drove in a run, and Taylor Askland struck out eight in 5 ⅓ scoreless innings to get the win.

Frontier (Calif.) 10, Foothill 9 — At Torrance, California, the Titans plated four runs in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Falcons in the National Tournament.

Foothill’s Skylar Glaude hit a two-run home run to highlight a three-run ninth inning that gave the Falcons a 9-6 lead.

But Frontier took advantage of a pair of errors in the bottom of the inning, and Tori Graley hit a two-out single RBI single to secure the win.

Glaude went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs for Foothill. Haileigh Olive was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Falcons.

Caitlyn Stevenson, Sadie Christian, Jocelyn Shupp, Katelyn Enzweiler and Kayla King each added two hits for Foothill.

San Pedro (Calif.) 7, Basic 3 — At Torrance, California, the Pirates scored two runs in each of the first two innings en route to the five-inning win over the Wolves in the National Tournament.

Sanoe Helenihi had two hits, and Shelby Basso drove in two runs for Basic.

Moorpark (Calif.) 5, Basic 1 — At Torrance, California, Lexy Johnston fired a three-hitter with six strikeouts as the Musketeers beat the Wolves in the National Tournament.

Mikayla Berg had two hits for Basic.

Cerritos (Calif.) 6, Centennial 4 — At Torrance, California, the Dons jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and held off the Bulldogs in the National Tournament.

Abby Hanley had two hits for Centennial.

Redondo Union (Calif.) 5, Foothill 4 — At Torrance, California, the Sea Hawks scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win in the National Tournament.

Glaude went 3-for-3 with three RBIs to lead Foothill.

Arbor View 16, Dixie (Utah) 2 — At St. George, Utah, Hannah Hickstein went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs as the Aggies rolled over the Flyers in the Sunroc Invitational.

Adriana Thomason, Taylor Beaman, Makenzie Gillan and Kaylea Patridge each went 2-for-3 for the Aggies, and Gianna Verali doubled.

Arbor View 15, Uintah (Utah) 10 — At St. George, Utah, Taylor Beaman and Makenzie Gillan each went 4-for-5 as the Aggies outslugged the Utes in the Sunroc Invitational.

Beaman had an RBI and three runs, and Gillan had an RBI and two runs.

Hannah Hickstein went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs for Arbor View.

Boulder City 6, Beaver (Utah) 4 — At St. George, Utah, the Eagles scored five runs in the fourth to beat the Beavers in the March Warm-Up.

Jerra Hinson was 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs, and Ryann Reese went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Boulder City.

Bailey Bennett-Jordan added a double and two RBIs for the Eagles.

Snow Canyon (Utah) 7, Boulder City 4 — At St. George, Utah, the Warriors took advantage of three errors to score four unearned runs to beat the Eagles in the March Warm-Up.

Bailey Bennett-Jordan allowed three earned runs on seven hits with 15 strikeouts for Boulder City.

Lake Mead 12, Laughlin 5 — At Mountain View, Josey White had three hits and four RBIs as the Eagles topped the Cougars in the Spring Slam.

Kayla Freund added three RBIs for Lake Mead.

Bishop’s School 16, Mountain View 1 — At Mountain View, Livy Schiele went 3-for-3 with a double, two homers, three RBIs and four runs as the Knights routed the Saints in the Spring Slam.

Miah Fields-Gibbens went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Mountain View.

Pahrump Valley JV 6, Lake Mead 4 — At Mountain View, the Trojans junior varsity edged the Eagles in the Spring Slam.

Luca Ford had three hits for Lake Mead.
