Looking ahead at the week in high school sports

Here is a look at some of this week’s top high school sporting events.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Wednesday — Coronado at Foothill, 6:30 p.m.
The Cougars and Falcons square off for an early edge in the Southeast League. Frontcourt players Kennedy Koehler and Will Weems lead Coronado against a deep Foothill team paced by guard Marvin Coleman.
Friday — Cheyenne at Canyon Springs, 6:30 p.m.
The Desert Shields surprised Desert Pines last week, and will look to knock off one of the area’s top Class 4A programs. Canyon Springs is off to an 11-2 start.
Saturday — Battle Born Classic at Durango
Six games take place beginning with Coral Academy vs. Rancho at 12:30 p.m. Legacy takes on Silverado at 2 p.m., Elko plays Cheyenne at 3:30 p.m., Chaparral plays Price (California) at 5 p.m., Centennial takes on Durango at 6:30 p.m., and Lynwood (California) plays Liberty at 8 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Monday — Foothill at Liberty, 5 p.m.
The top two teams in the Southeast League slug it out for a share of first place. Foothill, the defending league champion, lost all three meetings with the Patriots last season, including a 74-49 setback in the Sunrise Region final.
Tuesday — Bishop Gorman at Desert Oasis, 5 p.m.
First place in the Southwest League is on the line when the Gaels and Desert Oasis square off. Each team is 4-0 in league. The Diamondbacks were eliminated by Gorman in the Sunset Region semifinals last season.
Saturday — Centennial at St. Mary’s (California), 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs travel to Stockton, California, to take on the nationally ranked Rams in a game at the MLK Showcase. St. Mary’s is led by wing Aquira DeCosta, one of the nation’s top recruits in the class of 2018.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Monday — Green Valley at Coronado, 4:30 p.m.
The winner of this matchup could be on their way to getting the No. 1 seed in the Southeast League for the playoffs. The Gators are one of Southern Nevada’s hottest teams and are riding an eight-game win streak.
Tuesday — Desert Oasis at Bonanza, 4:30 p.m.
Makayla Rickard is one of Southern Nevada’s top quarterbacks and will look to give the Diamondbacks some breathing room at the top of the Southwest League. Dual-threat quarterback Brianna Hernandez-Silva will lead the Bengals.
Wednesday — Shadow Ridge at Centennial, 4:30 p.m.
The top-ranked Mustangs face last season’s CCSD champion in a Northwest League battle. Nicole Tripp-Herring, Jordan Ford and Samantha Milanovich give Shadow Ridge one of the top offenses in Southern Nevada. Centennial, meanwhile, fields one of the top defenses in the sport.
WRESTLING
Tuesday — Foothill at Green Valley, 6 p.m.
The five-time defending state champion Gators are back in action after routing Basic last week. In their way this week are the Falcons, who are undefeated in Southeast League matches.
Tuesday — Moapa Valley at Boulder City, 6 p.m.
Two of Class 3A’s best meet to open Sunrise League play with the Eagles hosting the Pirates. Boulder City has been strong so far this season, going toe-to-toe with Las Vegas on Dec. 15.
