Each year, there are a number of student-athletes looking to reach the Division I level in their given sport.
However, the reality is that it doesn’t happen very often.
In basketball and football, various websites are dedicated to ranking athletes based on a “star” system. Whether it’s right or wrong, this causes many players to shift their focus on getting at least a “three-star” label because that usually means one thing: a college scholarship.
In the class of 2017, 13 Southern Nevada football players have been given such a designation as of Monday. They are listed below in order of their collective rankings on ESPN.com and Scout.com.
Tate Martell, Bishop Gorman
Martell is the top quarterback in the country, the top player in the state and a five-star prospect, according to Scout.com. However, on ESPN.com, Martell is a four-star recruit and the 72nd overall player in the nation. He has committed to Ohio State.
Greg Rogers, Arbor View
Rogers, who transferred from Centennial last season, is the top-ranked player in Nevada and the 52nd overall recruit in the nation, according to ESPN.com. On Scout.com, Rogers is listed third in the state and 50th overall in the country. A consensus four-star prospect, Rogers trimmed his recruiting list to Arizona State, Colorado, Michigan, Oklahoma, Southern California and UCLA on May 29.
Haskell Garrett, Bishop Gorman
Garrett is ranked No. 112 in the ESPN 300 and is a consensus four-star prospect. He is considered the state’s best defensive tackle on Scout.com. He has committed to Ohio State.
Alex Perry, Bishop Gorman
Perry, a four-star defensive back, is No. 151 in the ESPN 300 and is 125th overall recruit on Scout.com. He decommitted from Arizona State in February, and holds scholarship offers from Arizona, Boise State, Colorado, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, UNLV, Utah, Washington State.
