SMALL-SCHOOL GOLF: Faith Lutheran’s Magruder takes big lead after opening round of I-A tourney

Faith Lutheran’s Charlie Magruder will take an eight-stroke lead into the final round of the Division I-A state golf tournament at Mountain Falls in Pahrump.

The junior, who won the state title in 2014, shot 5-under-par 67 on Tuesday to grab a comfortable lead at the midway point of the tournament and help the Crusaders sit atop the team standings.

Faith Lutheran, the two-time defending champion, has a team score of 389. Pahrump Valley is second at 411. Elko is third at 434, followed by Spring Creek (442), Boulder City (449) and Churchill County (450).

Pahrump’s Austen Ancell, the defending state champion, is second individually at 75, one stroke ahead of teammate Derrek Moore.

Faith Lutheran’s Trenton May is fourth at 78, and Faith Lutheran’s Mitch Conley and Moapa Valley’s Jacob Causey are tied for fifth at 79.

The final round begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain Falls.

DIVISION III

Incline’s Mitchell Cornell shot 69 at Mountain Falls on Tuesday to take a three-stroke lead at the midway point of the Division III state tournament.

White Pine’s Collin Young and Yerington’s Griffin Cooper each shot 72 to share second place, one stroke ahead of The Meadows’ Kevin Inthachack.

North Tahoe holds the lead in the team competition after an opening-round 422. The Meadows is second at 444, two strokes ahead of Incline. Lake Mead (453) is fourth, followed by Whittell (463) and Needles (465).

The final round begins at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain Falls.
