BOYS TRACK: Throwers help Liberty defeat Las Vegas

Liberty dominated the throwing events on Tuesday on the way to an 88½-58½ home victory over Las Vegas.

The Patriots took the top three in both the shot put and the discus. Nicholas Tapuala won the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 9 inches, and placed third in third in the discus (145-1). Cyrius Vea won the discus (166-9) and was third in the shot put (51-8).

Las Vegas’ Miguel Ramirez won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 47.1 seconds and the 3,200 in 10:25.4.

Arbor View, Bishop Gorman tie

At Bishop Gorman, the Gaels and the Aggies finished tied with 73 points.

Arbor View’s Aaron Price won the high jump (5-8), 110 hurdles (16.45) and 300 hurdles (43.73).

Elijah Clark won the 100 (11.27) and 200 (22.39) for the Aggies.

Robert Daesler won the 1,600 (4:34.97) and 3,200 (10:31.72) and finished second in the 800 to lead Gorman.

Rishawn Peppers-Johnson won the pole vault (11-0) and triple jump (38-4¼) and was third in the long jump for the Gaels.

Mountain Lions take three-team meet

At Sierra Vista, the Mountain Lions had just four individual event winners, but used their depth to post a narrow victory in a three-team meet.

Sierra Vista had 64½ points. Clark was second with 56½, and Cheyenne was third with 51.

Clark’s Liam Jones won the 1,600 in 4:52.62 and the 3,200 in 10:38.48.

Cheyenne’s Ashton Lawson won the 100 in 10.84 and the 200 in 22.17.

Harris leads Basic to win

At Coronado, Frank Harris won three events to lead Basic to victory over the Cougars and Canyon Springs.

Harris cleared 6-10 in the high jump. He also won the 100 (10.95) and 200 (21.68) for Basic, which had 83½ points. Coronado was second with 73½, and Canyon Springs had 29.

The Liberty girls track team won the Class 5A state title Saturday, snapping Centennial’s run of 10 straight crowns. Liberty and Faith Lutheran are boys co-champions.
