TARKANIAN CLASSIC: Durango off target in loss

Through its first six games of the season, Durango's boys basketball team didn't have any long scoring droughts.

The Trailblazers suffered through two Thursday afternoon.

Durango went nearly six minutes without scoring in the second half, and the cold spell proved costly in a 51-44 loss to Lynwood (Calif.) in the Tarkanian Classic at Bishop Gorman.

The Trailblazers (6-1) face Sierra Vista in a Gold Division game at 6:40 p.m. today at Faith Lutheran.

"It hasn't been a major issue," Durango coach DeShawn Henry said about the lack of scoring. "We didn't shoot the ball well. We didn't make free throws. We didn't make our layups down at the bucket. Just kind of off today."

Michael Diggins had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots for the Trailblazers, and Demetrius Valdez added 10 points.

Durango shot 32 percent from the field (18-for-56) and made six of its 13 foul shots while committing 20 turnovers.

Lynwood led 34-23 with 12:07 remaining in the second half before the Trailblazers used a 12-2 run to get back in the game.

Diggins closed out hard to block Oscar Lopez's 3-point attempt, grabbed the rebound and went coast to coast for a layup that cut the Knights' lead to 34-33.

Jason Landman (nine points, 10 rebounds) scored after a steal in the frontcourt to bring Durango as close as 36-35 with 7:07 left, but the Trailblazers didn't score again until Zyare Ruffin knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:26 to go to pull within 44-38.

Keith Carlton had 12 points for Lynwood and was 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in the final 43 seconds to keep the Trailblazers at bay.

Joe Tate had seven of his 12 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 1:59 left in the second half to give the Knights a 44-35 advantage.

"We had droughts. We didn't get it going late," Henry sad. "We looked a little tired, (lethargic), disoriented tonight. We played on Monday, we played a good game (Wednesday) night to get a win. Having to miss school today, playing out of our element playing out of sorts."

The Trailblazers used a 10-0 run to overcame a sluggish start, only to go the next five minutes without a field goal. Diggins' three-point play with 4:20 left in the first half ended the shooting slump, but Durango trailed 25-19 at halftime.

"I think we just kind of shot ourselves in the foot, didn't come out with the energy we needed," Henry said. "We've just got to regroup, get some rest, and come back (Friday) with a different mantra, come out there and play together."

Bishop Gorman 63, Redondo Union (Calif.) 58 — At Gorman, Charles O'Bannon had 24 points, four rebounds and five assists to help the Gaels hold off the Sea Hawks to move into the Platinum Division semifinals.

O'Bannon, who was 11 of 13 from the free-throw line, hit a 3-pointer that gave Gorman a 57-48 lead with 3:34 to play.

Redondo Union trimmed the lead to 59-56, but O'Bannon hit two free throws with 31 seconds left, and Christian Popoola made two free throws with 17 seconds left to secure the win.

Popoola added 13 points, and Chase Noma'aea had 10 points for Gorman, which got 13 rebounds from Zach Collins.

Morgan Means led Redondo Union with 20 points, and teammate Leland Green scored 10.

Findlay Prep 80, Mainland (New Zealand) 39 — At Gorman, P.J. Washington had 16 points as the Pilots routed the Eagles in the Prep Division.

Tristan Clark and Markus Howard each added 10 points for Findlay.

Jackson Stent had 13 points for Mainland.

Pasadena (Calif.) 61, Sierra Vista 56 — At Gorman, Maka Ellis had 22 points in the Mountain Lions' loss to the Bulldogs in a Gold Division winners' bracket game.

Lerone Gibson added 12 points for Sierra Vista, which rallied in the second half after trailing 37-23 at halftime.

Tyrek Adams had 26 points, including 17 in the first half, to lead Pasadena. Ben Burgoyne scored 16 for the Bulldogs.

Clark 49, Lehi (Utah) 35 — At Gorman, James Bridges had 11 of his 14 points in the first half, and the Chargers coasted past the Pioneers in the winners' bracket of the Gold Division.

Bridges made three 3-pointers in the first half as Clark led 27-17 at the break. Antwon Jackson added 10 points for the Chargers.

Marcus Draney had a game-high 20 points for Lehi.

Desert Oasis 66, Apple Valley (Calif.) 46 — At Desert Oasis, Aamondae Coleman had 11 points and 11 rebounds as the Diamondbacks earned the win in the Select Division.

Daron Fugleston had 12 points, and Jacob Heese had 10 points and eight rebounds for Desert Oasis.

Keenan Struebing led Apple Valley with 20 points.

Westchester (Calif.) 59, Desert Pines 45 — At Gorman, Keith Fisher scored 21 points, and the Comets used a 9-0 run to start the second half to defeat the Jaguars in the Platinum Division.

Luis Rodriguez had 11 points for Westchester.

Greg Floyd scored 14 points, and Capri Uzan had 10 points, including a 3-pointer at the first-half buzzer for Desert Pines. The Jaguars got no closer than 47-40 on an 18-foot jumper by Trevon Abdullah with six minutes left in the game.

C.I. Gibson (Bahamas) 64, LIberty 61 — At Desert Oasis, Asher Scavella had 19 points to help the Rattlers hold off the Patriots in the Gold Division.

Lavon Scott added 15 points, and Khari McKenzie scored 14 for Gibson, which led 33-23 at the half.

Cameron Burist led Liberty with 16 points. Logan Koch and Dyllan Robinson each added 11 points, and Kyle Thaxton scored 10 for the Patriots.

Las Vegas 59, Campbell County (Wyo.) 52 — At Faith Lutheran, Marquise Raybon scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half to rally the Wildcats by the Camels in the Premier Division.

Raybon, who touched the ball on nearly every possession in the second half, made a layup to put Las Vegas up 37-36 with 8:30 to go. The play sparked a 10-0 run and gave the Wildcats momentum the rest of the way.

Ronald Daniels contributed 10 points for Las Vegas, which trailed 21-16 at halftime.

Kain Morehead had 16 points, and Dawson Miessler added 11 points for Campbell County. Morehead, a 6-8 center, scored consecutive buckets to pull Campbell County within 55-50 with 1:00 left, but the Camels did not get any closer.

Cheyenne 52, Cathedral Prep (Pa.) 51 — At Faith Lutheran, William Moore hit a 15-foot jumper from the left elbow as time expired to lift the Desert Shields by the Ramblers in the Premier Division.

Moore, who scored a game-high 20 points, took a half-court pass from Kavon Williams before hitting the game-winner.

Dewayne Alexander had 12 points, and Wiliams scored nine for Cheyenne, which had an 18-point lead with 2:28 to go but fell behind 51-50 with 10 seconds remaining.

Carter Cross led Cathedral Prep with 15 points.

Faith Lutheran 81, San Bernardino (Calif.) 41 — At Faith Lutheran, Elijah Kothe hit four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Crusaders by the Cardinals in the Premier Division.

Zach Friel added 20 points, and Gary Tharaldson scored nine points for Faith Lutheran, which led 42-14 at halftime.

Isaac Magallan had 14 points for San Bernardino, and teammate Rayhaan Kayanda scored 11.

Fossil Ridge (Colo.) 80, Adelson School 36 — At Faith Lutheran, Braxton Bertolette had 24 points to power the Sabercats by the Lions in the Premier Division.

Garrett Schmidt added 17 points for Fossil Ridge.

Jake Buchman led Adelson with nine points.

Coral Academy 80, Western 45 — At Faith Lutheran, Kaleb Robinson scored 16 of his 20 points in the second half as the Falcons routed the Warriors in the Premier Division.

Isaiah Spears had 16 points, and Ryan Dijno added 15 points for Coral Academy, which led 33-15 at halftime.

Kwan Carter scored 14 points, and Anthony Dodson had 10 points for Western.
