Jones, Arbor View run past Gators
September 11, 2015 - 11:40 pm
Arbor View football coach Dan Barnson was not happy his team failed to convert on third-and-short late in the fourth quarter Friday with a chance to polish off an impressive road victory.
Considering the way the Aggies executed in their other short-yardage situations, Barnson will get over it.
Curtis Jones rushed for 212 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries, and No. 6 Arbor View converted three times on fourth down to keep scoring drives alive in a 35-20 victory over host Green Valley.
"We have one returning offensive starter and one returning defensive starter," Barnson said. "We're still very young. It is what it is. We're getting better. I'd rather fix things after a win than a loss."
Hayden Bollinger threw for 103 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 41 yards and a score rushing for the Aggies (2-1). Bollinger gained 24 yards down to the Green Valley 19-yard line on a fourth-and-1 play in the fourth quarter, and sneaked it in from 1 yard out to put the Aggies on top 35-20 with 6:36 remaining.
In the third quarter, Bollinger lofted a pass toward Bishop Jones on a fourth-and-6 from the Gators' 29, and the tight end made the catch between two defenders for a 28-yard gain. Curtis Jones scored from the 1 on the next play to give Arbor a 21-10 lead.
Curtis Jones added a 54-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, one play after No. 7 Green Valley (1-2) closed to within 21-17 on a 23-yard pass from A.J. Amelburu to wide receiver Brayon Williams.
Curtis Jones had a 1-yard run on fourth-and-1 to keep a second-quarter drive alive for Arbor View, and one play after a penalty, Bollinger threw a strike to Deago Stubbs for a 35-yard touchdown that put the Aggies up 14-3 with 7:42 left in the second quarter.
"Our first down is fourth down," Barnson said. "We run a lot of goal-line stuff, short-yardage stuff."
The Aggies ran for 291 yards, many of which came behind senior offensive tackle Keenen King, who showed his athleticism in front of UNLV assistant coach Cedric Cormier. The Rebels are one of several schools to offer King a scholarship.
"Curtis is really good," Barnson said. "We knew it last year. We saw it when he was younger, came up through our system. Curtis is doing exactly what Curtis needs to do."
Amelburu finished 23-for-47 for 319 yards and two touchdowns, and Austin Warhop had nine receptions for 157 yards.
Warhop scored on a 69-yard reception from Amelburu on the third play of the third quarter to bring Green Valley within 14-10, but the Gators were held to 34 yards rushing by Arbor View's physical defense.
