Wagstaff, Mustangs run wild against Mountain View

Needles running back Derek Wagstaff had the kind of game most backs dream of Saturday.

The 5-foot, 9-inch, 155-pound junior rushed for 252 yards and three touchdows on 17 carries to lead the Mustangs to a 56-0 win at Mountain View. Wagstaff scored on runs of 5, 83 and 56 yards for Needles (3-0, 2-0 Division III Southern League).

"Wags is a good running back," said Needles head coach Matt Fromelt. "He runs hard for his size, and he hits holes where he needs to hit them. He's a great kid who does everything right on and off the field."

The Mustangs jumped on the overmatched Saints (1-3, 1-2) early, exploding for 21 first-quarter points, and never let Mountain View get untracked. The Saints had 1 yard of total offense.

Quarterback Jayden Yeager hit Trenton Poe-Evans on a 30-yard scoring strike just less than eight minutes into the game to open the score.

Poe-Evans ran10 yards for a TD with 1:58 left in the quarter, and less than a minute later, Wagstaff ran for his first score.

On the first play of the second quarter, a bad snap sailed over the head of Mountain View punter Tyrell Brooks. Brooks, also the team's quarterback, tried to salvage the play, but was tackled on the Saints' 1-yard line.

One play later, Yeager scored on a quarterback sneak to push the lead to 27-0. After a Saints' punt, Wagstaff scored on a 83-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 34-0.

Yeager finished the game 5 of 8 passing for 112 yards and a touchdown. Poe-Evans caught three passes for 47 yards.

"The kids came out focused and did what they needed to do," Fromelt said. "The kids are still learning our system, where to go and where to line up. The Xs and Os still need to get there. We are a long ways away. Our (offensive) line needs to figure out the Xs and Os because we are still missing some things we need to do. Mainly, we are focusing on Xs and Os, techniques and the little things to make us better."
