VEGAS INVITATIONAL: Logan’s fast start powers Bengals to title

Jamal Logan’s clutch free throws lifted Bonanza’s boys basketball team to a one-point victory in the Vegas Invitational semifinals on Monday.

The junior’s encore might have been better against Chadwick (Calif.) in the championship game.

Logan scored 17 of his 26 points in the first half Tuesday to lead the Bengals to a 72-51 win over the Dolphins at Mountain View. He was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 18 points in four contests.

“First of all, Jamal is a great kid,” Bengals coach Eric Markuson said. “But he’s a great player and he’s one of the leaders on our team. We need him and DaVonta Price to get going every game. Those are kind of our two pistons in the engine. When those two get going, everyone else seems to feed off that. They mean the world to this team.”

Logan added four rebounds and four steals for Bonanza, which led 34-26 at halftime before using a 14-1 run to start the third quarter. The Bengals held the Dolphins without a field goal until 2:13 to go in the third.

“I told them to keep their foots on the gas,” Markuson said. “We were up eight (at halftime) and I said, ‘Don’t let up. They’re a good team’ … When they decide that they want to get after it, they can get after it. That was the key, defense and rebounding.”

Logan had 11 points in the opening quarter, including three 3-pointers, and the game was tied at 15 after one. But Logan, along with his teammates, cranked it up on defense to cause 15 turnovers the rest of the way. Chadwick finished with 18 turnovers, and shot just 15-for-50 (30 percent) because of the Bonanza defense.

Bonanza (9-4) held a 54-29 lead midway through the third quarter. The run was highlighted by a steal and breakaway dunk by Price with 5:00 minutes to go in the third. The Dolphins chipped away in the fourth, but the margin would get no closer than 12 points.

“I have high expectations for these guys,” Markuson said. “They worked really hard this summer and we wanted to win this (tournament). They worked very hard and we knew it would be a fight. There are some good teams in here.”

Price added 12 points, three assists and two blocked shots for Bonanza, which also got 10 points from D.J. Fletcher.

Brennan Burrows had 14 points, and Xavier Proctor scored 13 for Chadwick, which got nine points apiece from Ryan Apfel and Kyle Civale. Apfel also had eight rebounds and two assists for the Dolphins.

Logan and Civale led the all-tournament team, and were joined by Spring Mountain’s Steve Jones; Capistrano Valley Christian’s Simon Okolue; Sage Hill’s C.J. McCord; and Saint Joseph’s Chris Barganier.

Capistrano Valley Christian (Calif.) 77, Spring Mountain 72 — Cameron Conley led five double-figure scorers with 23 points as the Eagles outlasted the Golden Eagles in the third-place game.

Okolue had 20 points, and Peter Abramsky scored 14 for Capistrano Valley Christian, which got 10 points apiece from Kci Thompson and Daniel Quinland.

Jones recorded a game-high 28 points, and Maurice Stitt added nine points for Spring Mountain, which trailed 39-34 at halftime.

The Meadows 39, Brethren Christian (Calif.) 21 — Max Hisatake scored 10 of his 14 points in a 20-3 third quarter to lift the Mustangs by the Warriors.

Jake Epstein added 10 points for The Meadows, which led 12-10 at halftime before outscoring Brethren Christian 27-11 in the last two quarters.

Josh Duren led Brethren Christian with 14 points.

Sage Hill (Calif.) 48, Lincoln County 41 — Krishan Tarsadia had a team-high 14 points, and McCord scored 10 to lead the Lightning by the Lynx.

Mike Wood led Lincoln County with 13 points, and McClain O’Connor scored 12. Teammate Derek Shumway had 10 points for the Lynx, who trailed 25-17 at halftime.

Chadwick (Calif.) 62, Spring Mountain 58 — Civale scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half as the Dolphins outlasted the Golden Eagles in overtime.

Apfel added 12 points, and Proctor scored 10 for Chadwick.

Spring Mountain’s Shakori Clark had a game-high 28 points, and Jones added 15 points for the Golden Eagles, who shot 9-for-17 from the free-throw line.

Lake Mead 56, Brethren Christian (Calif.) 44 — Brendon LeBaron scored 13 points to help the Eagles rally past the Warriors.

Garion Glenn had eight points for Lake Mead, which trailed 24-22 at halftime before giving up just four points in the third quarter.

Duren had 21 points, and Andrew Glavinic scored 11 for Brethren Christian.

St. Joseph (Calif.) 79, The Meadows 55 — Barganier scored 22 points to power the Knights past the Mustangs.

JoJo Walker added 15 points, and Scott McBeth scored 13 for St. Joseph, which led 39-31 at halftime.

Hisatake scored 23 points, and Ethan Fridman had 15 points for The Meadows.

Fairmont Prep (Calif.) 59, Lincoln County 42 — Allen Tao led four players in double figures with 19 points as the Huskies blew by the Lynx.

Daniel Chatman scored 15, and Lionell Wiggins had 11 points for Fairmont Prep, which also got 10 points from Ramsey Glover. The Huskies led 39-21 at halftime.

Lincoln County’s O’Connor led the way with 16 points.

Sage Hill (Calif.) 64, Mountain View 50 — Mario Nark had 19 points, McCord added 16 points and Tyler Hague scored 12 as the Lightning topped the Saints.

Tevin Gray had 11 points for Mountain View, which got nine points apiece from Tyrell Brooks and Christian Bennett. The Saints trailed 32-18 at halftime.
