FOOTBALL: Fumbles, penalties don’t slow Canyon Springs in win over Foothill

Canyon Springs football coach Hunkie Cooper could have focused on his team’s countless mistakes Friday, but instead he walked off the field proud of his players for overcoming them.

The ninth-ranked Pioneers commited four fumbles, an interception and some untimely penalties but still finished the night with a 39-26 win over visiting Foothill.

Zaviontay Stevenson carried 18 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns to lead Canyon Springs (2-1), which benefited from several critical miscues by the Falcons (1-1).

“We talk a lot about adversity,” Cooper said. “It’s not adversity that kills you; it’s how you handle it.”

It looked like easy going in the opening minutes, as Stevenson’s 74-yard touchdown sprint gave the Pioneers a 6-0 lead on the game’s second play.

Canyon Springs fumbled on its next possession, and Foothill capitalized with a 2-yard scoring run by Justice Jackson to tie the score at 6-6 just two minutes later.

Kujuan Casey returned the lead to the Pioneers with a 47-yard TD catch from Bradley Alexander, but the Falcons again answered, going ahead 13-12 on a 30-yard pass from Devon Mueller to Aedan Bartolowits just before halftime.

The Falcons, who failed to scored on three trips deep into the red zone, imploded early in the second half. Two interceptions, a fumble, and two key penalties gave momentum to the Pioneers, who went ahead 26-13 on a 14-yard TD run up the middle and a 70-yard pass from Alexander to Kasey Allison.

Mueller connected with Cory Fisher to give Foothill a touchdown late in the third, but Alexander found Allison for another scoring pass early in the fourth to extend the Pioneers’ lead a 33-20.

A blocked punt helped Foothill get back in it, as Josh Ozuna scored on a 3-yard plunge with 6:52 remaining.

Canyon Springs went to work on the clock, but Stevenson broke through the line to seal the win for the Pioneers with an 86-yard TD run with 1:44 left.

“The thing there was that we were just trying to manage the clock,” Cooper said. “But any time Zaviontay touches the ball, he has the ability to change the game.”

Alexander completed 16 of 26 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns for Canyon Springs.

“We’re not the best football team right now, but we’re here,” Cooper said. “I challenge these guys on every single play.”

Mueller completed 13 of 28 passes for 187 yards and two TDs to lead Foothill.

Palo Verde 19, Las Vegas 0 — At Palo Verde, the No. 6 Panthers rushed for a season-high 303 yards as they stopped No. 5 Las Vegas in the first regular-season matchup between the two schools.

The Panthers set the tone from the opening possession, going 66 yards in seven plays, aided by two personal fouls by the Wildcats. Jaren Campbell finished the drive with a 5-yard run, and Palo Verde took a 7-0 lead.

On the second play of the second quarter, Palo Verde found the end zone again, as Darrion Finn scored on a 46-yard run. Aaron Mack missed the PAT, but the Panthers had a two-touchdown lead.

Just as impressive as the Panthers rushing attack was the Palo Verde defense, which limited Las Vegas to seven first downs and 94 total yards. Las Vegas’ longest play from scrimmage was 18 yards.

Palo Verde (2-1) controlled Las Vegas’ high-powered offense, as quarterback Trevor Swenson completed just 11 of 31 passes for 79 yards. Just a week ago, Swenson threw for 204 yards and four scores in the Wildcats’ win over Legacy.

Ty Fuller, who led Palo Verde with 94 yards on 21 carries, finished the scoring with an 8-yard run with 9:30 remaining.

Campbell added 90 yards on 17 carries for the Panthers, who held the Wildcats to 15 yards on the ground. Las Vegas (2-1) ran just 20 plays during the second half.

Cheyenne 38, Faith Lutheran 37 — At Faith Lutheran, the Crusaders jumped out to a 17-0 lead but the Desert Shields came back to win by stopping a conversion run in the second overtime.

In the second overtime, Cheyenne (2-2, 2-0 Division 1-A Sunrise), took the ball first and converted an A.J. McConnico pass to Laron Perkins for a 5-yard touchdown, followed by a Kamareeon Counts PAT. Faith Lutheran (1-3, 0-2) responded with a first-down TD pass from Greg Benson to Mark Rubalcaba. The Crusaders set up for the extra point kick, but the Desert Shields jumped offside. That enticed Faith Lutheran to go for two, but Cheyenne stuffed Christian Marshall on an attempt up the middle.

Cheyenne tied the game with less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter on a 76-yard pass from McConnico to Ashton Lawson. The Crusaders stopped a conversion run to preserve a 24-24 tie.

The Crusaders had a chance to win in regulation, moving from their 35 to the Cheyenne 23 on five plays. But the Desert Shields stood firm, forcing a 41-yard field goal try that missed.

The teams traded scores in the first overtime, with Cheyenne scoring on a 2-yard run by David Walker and Faith Lutheran connecting on a third-and-10 pass frmo Benson to Rubalcaba.

Walker rushed 23 times for 127 yards, while McConnico finished 6 of 10 for 146 yards and four touchdowns. For Faith Lutheran, Benson completed 13 of 20 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns, while Tyler Mahan made four catches for 81 yards.

Arbor View 41, Basic 20 — At Basic, Bryce Poster tossed two TD passes to help the No. 2 Aggies seize a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, and Herman Gray and Charles Louch each rushed for more than 100 yards to help Arbor View finish off the No. 10 Wolves.

Poster threw for 138 yards, and his 5-yard touchdown toss to Mitchell Durkee along with his 47 yard strike to Maurice Harvey for a score helped Arbor View (3-0) take a three-touchdown lead with 2:42 left in the first period.

The Aggies ground game took over from there, with Louch rushing seven times for 153 yards and two scores, and Gray rolling up 108 yards and two scores on 25 carries. Arbor View finished with 309 rushing yards.

Louch broke a 76-yard run to set up Gray’s 1-yard TD run on the first possession of the second half to push the lead to 28-0.

Basic (2-2) cut the lead in half behind quarterback Aeneas McAllister, who threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Josh Villaros in the third quarter and punched in a 1-yard TD run with 10:27 left in the fourth quarter.

After Louch’s 1-yard TD run for the Aggies, McAllister connected again with Villaros, this time on a 15-yard touchdown pass. But the Wolves got no closer, with Louch’s 39-yard TD run icing the win for Arbor View.

Centennial 47, Legacy 13 — At Centennial, Rhamondre Stevenson rushed for 196 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries, and quarterback Juan Rodriguez threw two TDs and ran for a score as the Bulldogs (3-0) overpowered the Longhorns (0-3).

Rodriguez found Savon Scarver over the middle for a 91-yard TD strike, and Stevenson provided a 1-yard TD plunge to put Centennial ahead 13-0 with 3:22 left in the second quarter.

Legacy’s Kourde Roberts hauled in a 35-yard TD reception from Tanoa Alapati to cut the lead to 13-6.

Rodriguez connected with Ivan Ochoa-Serrano on a 19-yard score with nine seconds left in the first half to push the Bulldogs’ lead to 20-6.

After another 1-yard TD run by Stevenson in the third quarter to cap a 10-play, 60-yard drive, Rodriguez added a 2-yard TD scamper with 9:43 left in the fourth quarter to push the Centennial lead to 34-6.

Alapati completed a 50-yard TD pass to Roberts to make it 34-13, but Legacy would get no closer.

Stevenson added a 53-yard TD run followed by a 45-yard score up the middle on consecutive drives.

Each team had more than 100 yards in penalties. Rodriguez finished 6 for 13 with 150 yards.

DeMichael Walker rushed for 108 yards on 19 carries, and Alapati tossed for 137 yards for Legacy, which got two sacks and eight tackles from Terrell Washington.

Desert Pines 34, Chaparral 21 — At Chaparral, Isaiah Morris scored twice and finished with 124 yards rushing and Marckell Grayson tossed three touchdown passes to pace the Jaguars (3-1, 1-1) over the Cowboys (1-3, 1-1).

Casey Acosta put Chaparral on the board with a 3-yard run on the third play from scrimmage, but Morris answered on the ensuing kickoff with an 85-yard return for a score. Jerome Williamson found the end zone on a 5-yard run, and Acosta added an 80-yard kickoff return of his own to give the Cowboys a 21-14 lead at the half.

On the first play of the second half, Morris broke free for an 80-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion gave the Jaguars a slight lead that they would not relinquish.

Grayson found Tyler Nofoa for a 15-yard touchdown pass, and later connected with Gianni Breland on a 58-yard touchdown catch and run that would be the final score of the game.

Boulder City 48, Del Sol 20 — At Del Sol, Logan Branscum scored on a run of 55 yards and a reception of 42 yards in the first half to pace the visiting Eagles.

Boulder City (3-1) capitalized on three Del Sol (3-1) fumbles to build a 36-14 halftime lead.

Branscum finished with 81 yards on seven carries. BC quarterback Trenton Carmell completed 5 of 10 passes for 75 yards and a score. He rushed for TDs of 19 and 6 yards.

Zach Murphy had a 35-yard fumble return for a score, putting the Eagles up 36-8 with 2:56 left in the first half.

BC’s Nelson Van Diest rushed for 63 yards on eight carries. He scored the game’s first touchdown on an 11-yard run.

Del Sol quarterback Rashaun Lawson scored on a 25-yard run and hooked up with Jay Peete for a 31-yard TD strike for the Dragons.

Shadow Ridge 25, Desert Oasis 14 — At Shadow Ridge, Dominick Wilson rushed for 235 yards and four touchdowns, pushing the Mustangs past the Diamondbacks for their first win.

Wilson rushed for 102 yards in the first half, scoring both of the Mustangs’ touchdowns in the first quarter. In the second half, Wilson put up another 133 yards and two more touchdown runs. The latter was a 6-yard run that capped a 90-yard drive late in the fourth quarter that melted 4:36 off the clock. On that drive, Wilson helped with two big runs of 19 and 30 yards to go along with a 32-yard pass from Elijah Quintoa to Kye Runnels.

Shadow Ridge trailed 14-12 at the half but shut down Desert Oasis in the second half. After gaining 152 yards in the first half, the Diamondbacks were held to just 73 yards in the second and were forced into punts on three of their four drives.

Qwade Huff led Desert Oasis with 94 yards on 14 carries, adding a 1-yard run late in the second quarter that completed a 12-play drive to put the Diamondbacks up at halftime.

Green Valley 43, Silverado 6 — At Silverado, the No. 8 Gators made sure head coach Brian Castro would have a happy birthday as they exploded for 14 first-quarter points in a blowout win over the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks running game came out clicking on a 58-yard, seven-play drive. But the Gators defense stiffened, forcing a 25-yard field goal attempt that was blocked by Jacob Houck

After that drive, the Gators high-octane offense took over as Brenan Adams capped an 80-yard, 16-play drive with a 3-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal. Green Valley’s Albert Lake intercepted a Jarrett Alipio pass on the Skyhawks’ next possession, and three plays later, Adams gave the Gators a 14-0 lead on a 30-yard touchdown run. Adams finished with 210 yards on 23 carries.

The Gators (3-1) pushed their lead to 20-0 late in the second quarter when Lake scored on a 3-yard run. Lake also scored on a 26-yard run on the Gators’ first possession of the second half. He finished with 132 yards on 15 carries.

The Skyhawks (1-2) responded when Robert Richardson caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Alipio, but the Gators kept padding their lead as quarterback Christian Lopez scored on runs of 15 and 1 yard. Frank Canales added a 24-yard field goal for the Gators.

Coronado 41, Bonanza 0 — At Coronado, quarterback John Farella was a perfect 10-for-10 passing with four touchdowns as the No. 7 Cougars earned the shutout win over the Bengals.

Farella connected with Tanner Gorski from 7 yards midway through the first quarter to get Coronado on the board. Michael Simpson caught a quick out that went for a 41-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Farella then lofted one up for Brian Johnson that went for a 31-yard strike as the Cougars (2-1) went to the break up 21-0.

Farella found Simpson again for a 17-yard touchdown early in the third, and Wade Jacobs had an interception that went for a score. Nick Trejo added a 30-yard touchdown run midway through the third to cap Coronado’s scoring.

Farella finished with 146 yards passing, while Simpson finished with 62 receiving yards.

Bonanza (0-3) was led by Chilo Dore, who ran for 26 yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Wyatt Allison added 22 rushing yards on 11 carries while ByJon Large caught two passes for 39 yards.

Eldorado 34, Durango 0 — Quarterback Devin Dabbs threw two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead the Sundevils over the Trailblazers.

Dabbs completed 17 of 31 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns and rushed nine times for 30 yards.

The Sundevils (3-0) defense allowed only 126 total yards and forced six turnovers. Joshua Brown intercepted Durango quarterback K.C. Moore in the second quarter and returned it 41 yards for a touchdown.

On offense, Brown added four catches for 85 yards and a touchdown and 40 rushing yards.

Tyler Spivey finished with five catches for 31 yards, including a 6-yard score from Dabbs early in the fourth quarter.

The Trailblazers (1-2) were led by junior running back Leontre Austin, who ran 16 times for 59 yards and caught five passes for 27 yards.

Agassi Prep 35, Lincoln County 8 — At Rancho, senior Kobe Williams rushed for 175 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Stars.

Agassi Prep (2-1, 1-0 Division III Southern) drove 61 yards on eight plays, capped by a 7-yard run by Williams to take a 7-9 first-quarter lead.

Late in the secord quarter, quarterback Kameron Burrell connected with Williams on 51-yard touchdown pass to give the Stars a 14-0 advantage. Lincoln County (1-2, 0-1) then drove to the Agassi Prep 1-yard line just before halftime but was unable to score. The Stars defense held the Lynx to 26 rushing yards during the first half.

The Stars broke open the game during the third quarter when Williams scored twice on runs of 11 and 36 yards. Stephan Lauschaul, who rushed for 104 yards, finished the scoring for Agassi Prep with a 70-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter.O’Connor finished with 63 yards passing but threw two interceptions in the game.

Lincoln County was more successful moving the ball in the fourth quarter behind leading rusher Preston Robbins, who finished with 75 yards. The Lynx scored their lone touchdown on a 14-yard run by Will Culverwell, and quarterback McClane O’Connor ran in the 2-point conversion. O’Connor finished with 63 passing yards but threw two interceptions.

Hamilton (Ariz.) 21, Liberty 0 — At Chandler, Ariz., the Huskies’ stingy defense gave up minus-23 rushing yards and forced four turnovers.

No. 3 Liberty (3-1) passed for 296 yards and trailed 14-0 at halftime.

Noah Jefferson and Ethan Dedeaux each had fumble recoveries for the Patriots. Hamilton is 4-0.

Moapa Valley 56, Sunrise Mountain 6 — At Overton, Kaleb Bodily had five carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Pirates past the Miners.

Zach Hymas completed 5 of 7 passes for 96 yards, including 43-yard TD pass to Cole Mulcock in the team’s 36-point first quarter. Mulcock finished with two receptions for 46 yards for Moapa Valley, which led 50-0 at halftime.

Trystin Deal had 10 carries for 88 yards and two TDs for the Pirates (4-0, 2-0 Division I-A Sunrise).

Sunrise Mountain’s Matt Perry was 7 of 22 for 100 yards and a TD. Alton Sanders hauled in a 36-yard touchdown pass from Perry in the third to put the Miners (0-4, 0-2 Sunrise) on the scoreboard.

The Meadows 48, White Pine 0 — At The Meadows, Jack Berkley had 11 carries for 111 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mustangs past the Bobcats.

The Meadows’ Jacob Gleason finished 6-of-10 passing for 66 yards, and teammate Ethan Fridman hauled in three receptions for 56 yards. Thayne Carlson added 31 yards rushing and two scores for the Mustangs, who led 42-0 at halftime.

Adam Martinez began the game with a 58-yard punt return, and Connor Bucknam added a 30-yard interception return for The Meadows (2-2, 1-0 Division III Southern), which played without star running back Bryson Navallo, who is nursing a sore ankle.

Drue Ashby rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries for White Pine (1-2, 0-1).

Round Mountain 54, Indian Springs 6 — At Indian Springs, Austin Boerst had three touchdown runs to help the Knights (3-1, 1-1 Division IV Southern) rout the Thunderbirds (0-2, 0-1).

Boerst scored on runs of 47, 5 and 35 yards. Garrett Cecchini added TD runs of 6 and 48 yards for the Knights, who built a 30-6 halftime lead.

Jacob Carden’s 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter accounted for Indian Springs’ scoring.

Spring Mountain 74, Beaver Dam 0 — At Spring Mountain, Sydney Shackerford rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kick for a score as the Golden Eagles stormed out to a 52-0 halftime lead and dominated the Diamondbacks.

Isaiah Saromines added a receiving TD for Spring Mountain (3-1, 2-0 Division IV Southern), which recorded two safeties. Beaver Dam fell to 0-2, 0-1.

Pahranagat Valley 56, Tonopah 13 — At Alamo, Tabor Maxwell passed for 269 yards and five touchdowns as th Panthers defeated the Muckers.

Maxwell, who completed 15 of 21 passes, had two TD passes in the first quarter: a 30-yarder to Shawn Wadsworth and a 58-yard pass to Jordan Cryts.

He had a 16-yard TD passes of 16 and 15 yards to Wade Leavitt in the second quarter, and a 5-yard scoring pass to Christian Higbee, also in the second quarter.

Leavitt rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and Wadsworth caught six passes for 150 yards.
