COWBOY CLASSIC: Ortiz’s clutch single gives Chaparral tourney title

Jose Ortiz’s bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning plated pinch-runner Kevin Woolman with the winning run as host Chaparral’s baseball team outlasted Eldorado, 2-1 in the championship game of the Cowboy Classic.
Tommy Crone, who threw two innings in Chaparral’s first game Wednesday, went the distance, allowing six hits and three walks and striking out 14.
Crone also went 2-for-3 for the Cowboys, who trailed 1-0 in the first inning but tied the game with a run in the fourth.
Chaparral 18, Mojave 1 — Luis Giro was 3-for-3 with a grand slam and a double, and the Cowboys scored 18 runs in the second inning on their way to a semifinal win over the Rattlers.
Chad Clark was 3-for-4, and Tyler Crone and Matt Ellison each added two hits for Chaparral.
Tyler Ledgister had both of Mojave’s hits.
Eldorado 14, Del Sol 7 — Don DiMaggio was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs, and Joe Torres was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs to help the Sundevils down the Dragons.
Josh Brown was 3-for-4 with a double, and Trevor Swain went 2-for-4 for Eldorado, which scored six runs in both the second and the seventh innings. Jason DiMaria was 2-for-4 for the Sundevils.
Aaron Squires and Jason Rolland each went 2-for-3 for Del Sol, which scored all of its runs in the second inning.
