NOTES: Local track and field stars set high standards at Mt. SAC Relays

The Mt. SAC Relays are often viewed as a preview of the California state meet. But that didn’t stop some local track and field standouts from crashing the party.

The meet, which took place last weekend at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., featured a handful of notable performances led by Bishop Gorman siblings Randall and Vashti Cunningham and Tiana Bonds of Centennial.

Randall Cunningham, who has signed with Southern California, cleared a season-best 7 feet, 2 inches on Saturday to win the boys invitational high jump. Bonds, meanwhile, was one of only two girls in the invitational meet to win two events as the Arizona-bound senior captured the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.

There is not a definitive list of the national leaders in each event, but Randall Cunningham’s is the No. 1 outdoor mark in the country, according to athletic.net, Dyestat.com and TrackandFieldNews.com.

Bonds’ meet-record time of 41.29 seconds in the 300 hurdles is No. 4 in the country, according to athletic.net’s and Dyestat.com’s rankings. She posted a season best of 13.62 in the 100 hurdles, which is No. 3 in the U.S. by Dyestat.com and No. 4 by TrackandFieldNews.com.

Bonds also ran the 400-meter leg on the Bulldogs’ sprint medley relay that finished second and was on the 4x400 relay that was fifth.

Vashti Cunningham captured the girls high jump with a meet-record mark of 6-1. The sophomore is the consensus national leader in the event with a season best of 6-2 set at the Arcadia (Calif.) Invitational on April 12.

Liberty senior Reno Tu’ufuli was the other local winner as he took the discus with a heave of 185 feet, 11 inches. The mark was a little more than 2 feet shy of the meet record and well short of his season best of 196-10, which is No. 2 in the nation, according to TrackandFieldNews.com.

■ BROWN EARNS ACCOLADES — Centennial guard Troy Brown was named a second-team Freshman All-America by MaxPreps.com.

The 6-foot-5-inch Brown averaged 15.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 4.0 assists as the Bulldogs went 25-4 and advanced to the Division I Sunset Region final. He was a second-team all-state selection and already holds a scholarship offer from UNLV.

■ RECRUITING WATCH — Green Valley senior Nikki Drost, the Northeast League Most Valuable Player, signed a national letter of intent with Winthrop for women’s volleyball. … Green Valley senior Faith Ezelle made an oral commitment to Saddleback College (Calif.) for women’s soccer. … Coronado senior Taylor Jackson made an oral commitment to Vanguard (Calif.) for women’s volleyball. … Arbor View senior Zanae Jones made an oral commitment to Boise State for women’s cross country and track. … Coronado senior Max Osmundson made an oral commitment to Hope International (Calif.) for men’s volleyball.
