RECRUITING: Three Gorman football players commit
January 20, 2014 - 12:10 pm
Bishop Gorman seniors Zack Singer, Dylan Weldon and Tryson Mook made oral commitments, Gaels football coach Tony Sanchez said.
Singer, a 6-foot-3-inch, 295-pound lineman, chose Kent State on Sunday at the end of his official visit to the school in Kent, Ohio, and Weldon, a cornerback, selected Columbia.
Sanchez said Monday that Gaels offensive lineman Tryson Mook made an oral commitment to Colorado Mesa.
The commitments are nonbinding and the first day the trio can sign a letter of intent is Feb. 5. College coaches cannot comment until that time.
"I'm extremely happy for both Zack and Dylan," Sanchez wrote in a text message Sunday. "Zack had an amazing 4 year career at Bishop Gorman and is one of the toughest players I have ever coached. Kent State is fortunate to have him as a player and person.
"Dylan really developed into a special player and it showed up big for us this past season. He'll have a great career at Columbia and an Ivy League education."
Singer was a first-team all-state pick at center and defensive line and is the No. 7 recruit in the state, according to Rivals.com. He finished with 37 tackles and 3.5 sacks, helping the Gaels to their fifth consecutive large school state championship.
Singer, who is expected to play center for the Golden Flashes of the Mid-American Conference, drew interest from a handful of Division I schools. He also had known offers from Football Championship Subdivision schools Idaho State, North Dakota, Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Weber State.
The 5-9, 175-pound Weldon led Gorman with six interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown, to go along with 28 tackles. Weldon also scored on a 65-yard blocked field goal return against Bonanza.
Weldon picked Columbia over offers from Georgetown and Sacramento State.
The 6-3, 278-pound Mook was a second-team All-Southwest League selection at tackle.
