TRACK: Gorman’s Vashti Cunningham improves high jump mark

Bishop Gorman’s Vashti Cunningham improved her nation-leading mark in the high jump and won two other events Saturday during a four-team meet at Gorman.

Cunningham won the high jump in 6 feet, 0¼ inches, which is tops in the U.S. for girls, according to Dyestat.com. Her previous best this season was 5-11½.

Cunningham also won the long jump (17-7¼) and the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.97 seconds.

In the boys meet, Legacy’s Casey Hughes swept the sprints, taking the 100 in 10.86 and the 200 in 22.23.

Bishop Gorman’s Jackson Perry swept the throws, winning the shot put with a mark of 48-0½ and the discus in 141-9.

Team scores were not kept for the meet, which also included Mojave and Shadow Ridge.

Faith Lutheran girls win meet

At Covina, Calif., Cayla Nikodemuch took first in the 100 in 12.44 and won the long jump with an effort of 18-1½ to help Faith Lutheran’s girls win the 30-team Covina Invitational.

The Crusaders’ Clarissa Maxey won the 400 in 58.66, and Faith Lutheran’s 400 and 1600 relay teams each finished second.

In the boys meet, Faith Lutheran’s Mark Rubalcaba finished first in the long jump with an effort of 23-3½ and took third in the triple jump.
