BLAZER BASH: Hold, Shadow Ridge blank Chatsworth

Logan Hold knew nothing about the Chatsworth (Calif.) baseball team when he stepped on the mound Monday at the Blazer Spring Bash.

But after putting the finishing touches on a complete-game six-hitter, the Shadow Ridge pitcher had just about everyone fooled.

The right-hander struck out eight and walked one on 93 pitches as the Mustangs powered past the Chancellors 5-0 at Durango.

“I think as I get deeper into the game, I see how I can get each hitter out,” Hold said. “I see what I can do and what their weaknesses are so I can exploit that more. First time around, especially guys from California, you don’t know much about them.”

Hold, displaying excellent command, needed six pitches in the fifth inning and 13 pitches in the sixth to retire the side in order. He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third inning. Chatsworth stranded six runners.

“I was spotting down in the zone with everything,” Hold said. “Sliders were staying down. I kept it up a couple times, and they hit it. My biggest thing is keeping all my pitches down and mixing speeds.”

Hold also helped himself at the plate. After Alec Pittsenbarger reached on a standup triple with one out in the third inning, Travis Caskie and Hold each followed with run-scoring doubles to provide Shadow Ridge (13-1) a 2-0 advantage.

The Mustangs, who had five extra-base hits on the day, tacked on another run in the fourth on Cory Royer’s run-scoring double.

“We tell our kids in order to win games against good teams, you have to be able to execute,” Shadow Ridge coach Frank Tousa said. “We just played a team game, and it’s good to see good competition.”

Pittsenbarger cushioned the lead in the sixth with a two-run double. The senior center fielder went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run. Hold and Royer each were 2-for-4 with an RBI.

“We came out with more intensity and better plate approaches,” said Tousa, whose squad dropped its first game 6-1 to Centennial (Calif.). “We were ready to play the game. The first game, our head wasn’t in it.”
