ROUNDUP: Second-quarter run fuels Virgin Valley to tourney title

Kourtney Metzger tallied 11 of her 19 points during a 17-7 second-quarter run Saturday that helped host Virgin Valley defeat Valley, 47-42 in the championship game of the Lady Bulldog Invitational.

Metzger added seven rebounds for the Bulldogs, who used the burst to take a 24-17 halftime lead. Tournament MVP Abbie Barnard added 15 points and four assists for Virgin Valley.

Gabby Cabanero had 12 points, and Jordan Fullow scored 11 for the Vikings, who played without guard Kennedy Wharton due to illness.

Cabanero and Metzger joined Virgin Valley’s Nikki Arquette, Moapa Valley’s Kimberly Lewis and Panguitch (Utah)’s Taylor Bennett on the all-tournament team.

Valley 52, Moapa Valley 34 — At Mesquite, Cabanero poured in 22 points to help the Vikings reach the tournament final with a win over the Pirates.

Wharton added 16 points for Valley, which used a 29-14 run during the middle two quarters to take control.

Makendie Frei and Lewis each had eight points for Moapa Valley.

Virgin Valley 38, Desert Oasis 18 – At Mesquite, Barnard had 15 points, and the Bulldogs grabbed a 10-1 lead after one quarter and downed the Diamondbacks in the other semifinal.

Metzger supplied 13 points and six rebounds, and Nikki Arquette had eight points, eight rebounds and three assists for Virgin Valley.

Savanna Spears led Desert Oasis with six points.

Desert Oasis 36, Moapa Valley 35 — At Mesquite, Courtney Scheller had eight points, and the Diamondbacks rebounded to claim the third-place game.

Jackie Garcia added seven points for Desert Oasis, which played without leading scorers Sammi Tso and Tatiana Kearn, both due to injury.

Lewis had 16 points for Moapa Valley.

Valley (Utah) 44, Pahranagat Valley 43 — At Mesquite, Kyra Milligan had 12 points, and Heather Roundy added 11 points to help the Buffalos nip the Panthers in the Lady Bulldog Invitational.

Bailee Hosier had 15 points, and Traci Strong scored 12 for Pahranagat Valley, which got 10 points from Jamie Hansen.

Panguitch (Utah) 65, Pahranagat Valley 35 — At Mesquite, Bennett poured in 22 points as Panguitch ran away from the Panthers.

Hosier led Pahranagat Valley with 15 points.

Pine View (Utah) 53, Tech 23 — At Tech, Elaine Asaasa and Kirsten Anderson each scored 14 points to help Pine View top the Roadrunners.

Sierra Martine led Tech with seven points.

Orange Lutheran (Calif.) 55, Faith Lutheran 31 — At Orange, Calif., Abbey Goodsell tallied 19 points, and the Lancers used a 12-0 second-quarter burst to take a 32-7 halftime lead on their way to a win over the Crusaders.

Julia Benko had 12 points, and Alexandra Wright scored 11 for Faith Lutheran.

Agassi Prep 59, Laughlin 31 — At Agassi Prep, Javoulaee Green had 15 points, and Jada Smith scored 13 to power the Stars past the Cougars.

London Ward added eight points for Agassi Prep, which raced to a 27-13 halftime lead.

DeAnna Tripp paced Laughlin with 10 points.

4A/3A girls state roundup: Legacy, Canyon Springs ousted

Legacy and Canyon Springs couldn’t keep up in the Class 4A girls basketball state semifinals. The Southern Region representatives in 3A also were eliminated.
