ROUNDUP: Desert Pines punches ticket

Desert Pines football coach Paul Bennett explained his team’s playoff situation before the game Friday, and he hoped his players would respond.

By the end of the first quarter, it was apparent that they got the point.

Malik Davis rushed 15 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Desert Pines took control early to roll to a 48-28 victory over Chaparral.

The win improved the Jaguars to 5-3, 3-1 1-A Sunrise to assure a postseason berth.

“We told our kids that this game would assure a playoff spot,” Bennett said. “We needed this game.”

Davis helped establish the early tempo, starting the game with a 41-yard sprint and capping an eight-play opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Jaguars a 6-0 lead.

“That kid is special,” Bennett said of Davis. “He has the heart of a lion, and he knows how to play the game.”

The Jaguars extended their lead to 14-0 on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Iquan Corsey to Eric Wilkes before the Cowboys (4-4, 1-3) finally put together a drive of their own.

Quarterback Jason Jonshon ran 29 yards up the middle to cut Chaparral’s deficit to 14-7. The Cowboys scored again on a 57-yard pass from Jonshon to James Bryant, but a 1-yard TD run by Corsey and a 14-yard scoring pass from Corsey to Tim Hough as the first half expired gave Desert Pines a 30-13 halftime lead.

Bennett said he liked his squad’s aggressive play.

“We attacked them the way we thought we could attack them,” the coach said. “Our kids did a great job. They’re starting to believe.”

Chaparral opened the second half with a 10-play scoring drive, cutting the deficit to 30-21 when Antonio Thomas scored on a 13-yard run.

But Davis answered quickly by returning the ensuing kick 97 yards to give Desert Pines a 36-20 lead. He ran for a 2-yard TD early in the fourth quarter to put it away.

Thomas, who scored Chaparral’s final TD on a 3-yard run with 6:09 remaining, finished with 94 yards on 19 carries. Jonshon added 47 yards on seven carries.

Corsey, whose 16-yard run late in the fourth made it 48-28, rushed 13 times for 42 yards. Teammate Eric Wilkes gained 63 yards on 10 carries.

Silverado 30, Valley 23 — At Valley, Alex Cater scored on a 1-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the Skyhawks (4-2, 1-1 Northeast) over the Vikings (1-5, 0-2).

Quarterback Marquise Edward set up the winning score with a 33-yard fourth-down pass to a wide-open Austin Hunt with just over a minute remaining.

Cater ran for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries.

Valley took a 23-22 lead with 8:27 remaining after an errant snap on a punt by Silverado deep in Skyhawks territory. Tyrone Prewitt scored on a 6-yard run to put the Vikings on top.

Dillard Davis led Valley with 75 yards on the ground.

Liberty 38, Del Sol 19 — At Del Sol, Tyler Newman threw for two scores and ran for another as the No. 2-ranked Patriots (5-1, 2-0 Southeast) downed the Dragons (1-5, 0-2).

Newman, who had 172 yards passing, threw a 15-yard TD pass to Jaylen Mitchell with 33 seconds left in the second quarter that pushed the Liberty lead to 21-6. He also threw a 51-yard TD pass to Kai Nacua in the second half.

Liberty overcame a big game from Cameron Lamont, who rushed for 251 yards and a score on 34 carries for Del Sol.

Lamont rushed for 80 yards on the game’s opening drive, capping it off with a 7-yard touchdown run to give the Dragons an early 6-0 lead.

But Newman countered on the ensuing drive, scoring on a 2-yard run and then tossing a pass to Nacua for a 2-point conversion to give the Patriots the lead with 3:16 left in the first quarter. Liberty never trailed again.

Bishop Gorman 56, Bonanza 0 — At Gorman, Jarrett Solomon accounted for four touchdowns and Nathan Starks scored three times as the No. 1-ranked Gaels (6-1, 3-0 Southwest) dominated the visiting Bengals (1-6, 0-3).

Solomon threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score as Bishop Gorman scored 49 of its 56 points in the first half.

Jamir Tillman tallied 108 yards receiving and a score. The Gaels rushed for 355 yards total.

The Gorman defense made a goal-line stand at the 1-yard line in the third quarter to preserve the shutout.

Arbor View 57, Shadow Ridge 6 — At Shadow Ridge, the third-ranked Aggies (7-0, 3-0 Northwest) racked up 432 yards to take a 50-0 lead at halftime and easily held on to defeat the Mustangs (1-6, 1-2).

Arbor View scored on the third play from scrimmage on a 48-yard touchdown run by Anthony Smith.

Ricky Clark burst through the middle and sprinted 98 yards for the Aggies’ second score, and Rasheem Parks found Jacob Parker open for a 48-yard touchdown to give Arbor View a 22-0 lead after one quarter.

Weston Gardner had a pair of interceptions and a 19-yard touchdown run, Herman Grey scored two rushing TDs, Parks hit Jacob Speaks for a 64-yard touchdown and Salah Boyce added a 30-yard touchdown run to round out the scoring for the Aggies.

Palo Verde 62, Sierra Vista 7 — At Palo Verde, Ryan Beaulieu touched the ball only five times but scored three touchdowns for the No. 5-ranked Panthers (5-3, 3-0 Northwest) as they rolled over the Mountain Lions (1-6, 0-3).

Beaulieu scored on a 60-yard run, caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and returned a punt 80 yards for another score. He finished with 218 total yards.

Lee Griggs led Palo Verde in the first half with 107 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Corey Clark rushed for 54 yards and a score in the second half.

Deyon McKinney rushed for 33 yards and threw for 48 yards and a touchdown for Sierra Vista, but he was intercepted three times. Keyyon Metoyer-Bush picked off two of those passes and returned one 28 yards for a Panther score.

Canyon Springs 51, Rancho 0 — At Rancho, the No. 7-ranked Pioneers (4-2, 2-0 Northeast) held the Rams (0-6, 0-2) to minus-5 yards of offense to ruin their homecoming.

Nigel Perry ran for two touchdowns for Canyon Springs, including a 66-yarder to open the second half. Donnel Pumphrey added 51 yards rushing.

Joe Jackson threw for 79 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown to Diamante Luna in the fourth quarter to put the Pioneers up by 51.

Tobias Carson also recovered a Rancho fumble and took it 40 yards to the end zone to extend Canyon Springs’ lead.

Tuilealatasi Taoipu led Rancho with 28 yards rushing.

Coronado 35, Eldorado 7 — At Eldorado, Kevin Lucero threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns to lead the No. 10-ranked Cougars (4-2, 1-1 Southeast) past the Sundevils (1-5, 0-2).

Brock Taeubel hauled in two of those touchdown passes, and Derrick Keller caught the other. Taeubel also ran back the opening kick of the second half 94 yards for a score, and Keller added 133 yards rushing and a touchdown for Coronado.

Justin Brown ran for 118 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown, for Eldorado.

Cheyenne 40, Faith Lutheran 14 — At Faith Lutheran, Myloe Lewis ran for 244 yards and five touchdowns to lift the Desert Shields (6-2, 4-0) past the Crusaders (4-4, 2-2) to clinch the I-A Sunset title.

Lewis scored on runs of 43, 7, 45, 7 and 75 yards for Cheyenne.

The Desert Shields forced four first-half turnovers to take a 20-0 halftime lead, starting with an average field position inside the Faith Lutheran 40-yard line.
Devin Tatum got Cheyenne on the board early, completing a 10-play, 78-yard drive with a 3-yard run.

Faith Luteran recovered an onside kick to open the second half and scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jake Deaville to Sean Bischel. The Crusaders’ hope was short-lived, however, as Lewis scored on Cheyenne’s next three drives.

Anthony Pryatel-Farmer led Faith Lutheran with seven catches for 75 yards.

Legacy 55, Desert Oasis 0 — At Legacy, Charles Julian rushed for 213 yards and two touchdowns as the Longhorns (4-3, 2-1 Southwest) celebrated homecoming with a rout of the Diamondbacks (1-6, 0-3).

Julian had touchdown runs of 7 and 49 runs for the Longhorns, who gained 449 yards on the ground. LaMarus Williams, Isaiah Purdy, Cody Polvado and DeMichael Walker each scored for Legacy.

Quarterback Kashwan Richardson rushed for a 2-yard score and threw a 74-yard pass to Joe Murray for another TD.

Desert Oasis gained only 141 yards, 101 of those in the opening quarter, and turned the ball over four times. Herman Smith completed 12 of 25 passes for 137 yards. Marvin Duty led the Diamondback receiving group with five catches for 56 yards.

Durango 42, Spring Valley 0 — At Durango, Marcus Sanders-Williams rushed for 163 yards and three touchdowns, sparking the Trailblazers (4-3, 2-1 Northwest) past the Grizzlies (2-5, 0-3).

Sanders-Williams scored on runs of 10, 26 and 58 yards.

Gene Germain, who finished with 88 yards on 11 carries, added an 18-yard TD run and an 8-yard interception return for a score for Durango.

Durango’s defense held Spring Valley to 83 yards and forced three turnovers.

Arie McQuaig ran for 92 yards for Durango, which got a 6-yard option-keeper TD from quarterback Brett Neighbors.

Tyler Stevens had 11 tackles on defense for the Grizzlies.

Mojave 45, Clark 7 — At Clark, quarterback Zack Arave passed for 180 yards and three scores and ran for another 113 yards to lead the Rattlers (4-4, 3-1 I-A Sunset) over the Chargers (1-7, 1-3).

Mojave’s Ty Flanagan had touchdown runs of 23, 17 and 43 yards.

Donte Bowen had a 3-yard plunge in the third quarter to lead the Chargers.

Boulder City 55, Sunrise Mountain 6 — At Sunrise Mountain, Sam Woodbury rushed for 123 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Eagles (7-1, 3-1 I-A Sunrise) past the Miners (2-6, 0-3).

D.J. Koopman rushed for 185 yards and added a 30-yard touchdown catch, and Corbett Fleming ran for 139 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.

The Eagles held the Miners to 125 yards of offense while amassing 563 offensive yards of their own.

The Meadows 63, Lake Mead 6 — At The Meadows, six players scored rushing touchdowns as the Mustangs (2-6, 2-5 Division III Southern) routed the Eagles (0-7, 0-6).

Sophomores Bryson Bickart and Nathan Devera ripped off touchdown runs of 73 and 83 yards, respectively. Bickart led the team with 141 yards and three scores on only three carries.

The Meadows feasted on good field position all night as the defense gave the Mustangs the ball in Lake Mead territory nine times, including four consecutive possessions in the first quarter. The Mustangs converted each of those opportunities into touchdowns, two each by Bickart and Chase Marrs, to build a 33-0 lead.

The defense held Lake Mead to only seven first downs for the game and forced four turnovers, highlighted by two Ethan Friedman interceptions.

For Lake Mead, Daniel Hunter rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries, and also recovered a fumble, blocked a kick and recorded a team-high 12 tackles. Quarterback Brenden LeBaron chipped in a touchdown run for Lake Mead.

Laughlin 26, Calvary Chapel 0 — At Calvary Chapel, Benjamin Jacobo rushed for touchdowns of 10 and 69 yards as the Cougars (3-4, 3-4 Division III Southern League) spoiled homecoming for the Lions (3-4, 3-3).

Bobby Day ran for a 13-yard TD to help the Cougars build a 14-0 halftime lead, and teammate A.J. Nelson added a 6-yard fumble return for a TD in the third quarter.

Moapa Valley 47, Virgin Valley 6 — At Overton, Sean McConnell rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown on six carries and caught two passes for 27 yards and a TD as the Pirates (8-1, 4-0 Division I-A Sunrise) routed the rival Bulldogs (4-4, 1-3) to retain the “Victory Hammer.”

Moapa Valley’s Conner Mortensen rushed 10 times for 92 yards and two TDs, and Kasen Hughes added 70 yards and two TDs on eight carries.

Josh Repp passed for 77 yards and a TD, and Jared Repp added a 31-yard TD for Moapa Valley.

Garrett Leavitt connected with Cristian Aguirre on a 26-yard TD pass on the final play for Virgin Valley.

Pahrump Valley 21, Western 8 —
At Pahrump, A.J. Segura rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown and passed for 63 yards and another score as the Trojans (2-6, 2-2 Division I-A Sunset) beat the Warriors (1-7, 0-4).

Segura scored on a 5-yard run and hit Dalton Beighley with a 10-yard TD pass as the Trojans built a 21-0 halftime lead.

Pahrump’s Cody Keasling carried 15 times for 93 yards, including a 1-yard TD.

Larry Jennings threw a 10-yard TD pass to Quayjon Walker for Western.

Spring Mountain 60, Round Mountain 20 —
At Round Mountain, Christopher Munro caught two touchdown passes from Marcus Thomas and added a rushing TD to lead the Eagles (6-1, 4-1 Division IV Southern) past the Knights (4-3, 2-2).

Mountain View 47, Needles 13 —
At Needles, Calif., Matt Larson rushed for three touchdowns as the Saints (7-1, 6-0 Division III Southern) routed the Mustangs (4-3, 4-2).

Tonopah 45, Indian Springs 26 — At Tonopah, Seth Littlefield rushed for 105 yards and two TDs on 13 carries and passed for 125 yards and two TDs to lead the Muckers (5-2, 2-2 Division IV Southern) by the Thunderbirds (2-5, 2-3).

Tonopah’s Spencer Littlefield caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown and made two interceptions. Teammate Jason Carman picked off two passes, returning one for a touchdown.
