ROUNDUP: Pumphrey propels Pioneers
Canyon Springs running back Donnel Pumphrey did everything he could to help his team win Friday.
He accomplished that goal, but only after teammates made his task a bit more difficult.
The fifth-ranked Pioneers squandered a big first-half lead with a flurry of mistakes, but hung on for a 29-21 home victory over Silverado.
Pumphrey rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, but he could have had a much bigger night considering he had three touchdowns negated by penalties.
Canyon Springs coach Hunkie Cooper had little praise for his team, aside from Pumphrey.
“He plays hard,” Cooper said. “That’s the way he practices. He’s so speedy, and he brings something high school kids just don’t bring.”
The mood was upbeat on the Pioneers’ sideline early, as Pumphrey scored on a 49-yard run and Bradley Alexander connected with Devon Neal for a 17-yard TD pass in the first quarter to make it 14-0.
The lead soon grew when Alexander found Kajuan Casey streaking upfield for a 44-yard TD pass midway through the second quarter.
“When you’re up 21-0, you’ve got to go put it to them,” Cooper said.
Instead, things began unravelling. The Pioneers (3-2, 1-0 Northeast League) turned the ball over on downs deep in Skyhawks territory, allowing Silverado to score on a 1-yard plunge by Alex Cater to end the half.
The Skyhawks (3-2, 0-1) opened the second half with an onside kick, recovered and used a 13-play drive to trim the deficit to 21-15 when Cater scored on a 2-yard run.
They succeeded with another onside kick moments later, but eventually fumbled to end the drive.
Cooper said he was disappointed with his special teams, and with his squad’s several drive-killing penalties.
“I don’t know how you get those touchdowns called back and you give up two onside kicks,” he said. “We’ve got to play on our level. We can’t drop down to our opponents’ level.”
Pumphrey saved the day with a 35-yard TD run late in the third quarter to put the Pioneers ahead 29-15.
Though the Skyhawks took advantage of a Pioneers fumble to cut it to 29-21 on a 33-yard TD pass from Marquise Edward to Alek Aragon with 2:09 remaining, their final onside kick was recovered by Canyon Springs, which ran out the clock.
Alexander completed 5 of 6 passes for two touchdowns for Canyon Springs.
Cater led Silverado with 152 yards on 39 carries.
Cheyenne 20, Mojave 18 — At Cheyenne, Myloe Lewis scored all of Cheyenne’s points, and the division-leading Desert Shields (5-2, 3-0 I-A Sunset) won in overtime by stopping Rattlers quarterback Zack Arave short of the goal line on a 2-point conversion.
Mojave (3-4, 2-1) scored in OT on Arave’s 15-yard pass to Tyreek Carter on third-and-goal. But Arave was stopped for no gain on the tying 2-point attempt.
After the teams went to overtime tied at 12-all, Cheyenne scored first on Lewis’ 1-yard run and conversion run. The area’s leading rusher also scored on runs of 2 and 7 yards in the first half and finished with 128 yards on 28 carries.
Billy Murphy scored on a 39-yard run for Mojave and caught a 20-yard TD pass for Arave, who finished 9 of 15 for 115 yards. Lorenzo Guerrero’s fumble recovery and 58-yard return set up Murphy’s TD catch in the third quarter.

Centennial 65, Desert Oasis 22 — At Desert Oasis, Brandt Honda returned a punt and an interception for touchdowns, and the No. 4 Bulldogs (5-1, 2-0 Southwest) rode defense and special teams past the Diamondbacks (1-5, 0-2).
Centennial led 42-7 after scoring 21 points in a 1:07 span of the second quarter. Austin Turley scored on a 10-yard keeper, Coby Newton ran for a 7-yard TD following Haikeem Arnold’s fumble recovery, and Honda capped the surge with a 20-yard interception-return TD.
Honda’s punt-return TD in the first quarter covered 64 yards, and Deandre White also returned an interception 40 yards for a score. Jordan Karst had four of Centennial’s six sacks.
For Desert Oasis, Marvin Duty caught three TD passes among his eight receptions for 158 yards.

Bishop Gorman 54, Cimarron-Memorial 3 — At Cimarron, the top-ranked Gaels (5-1, 2-0 Southwest League) controlled both sides of the ball and led 51-0 at halftime in beating the Spartans (3-3, 1-1).
Ryan Smith returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and caught a 50-yard TD strike from Jarrett Solomon. Solomon added a 6-yard scoring pass to Robert Stanley, Nathan Starks ran for two touchdowns, Justin Sweet ran for a 5-yard TD and Dalton Baker returned an interception 35 yards for a score.
Gorman’s defense registered a safety and held Cimarron to 83 yards.

Palo Verde 41, Spring Valley 0 — At Spring Valley, Ryan Beaulieu made a touchdown catch and also ran for a score, powering the sixth-ranked Panthers (4-3, 2-0 Northwest) past the Grizzlies (2-4, 0-2).
Parker Rost passed for 123 yards, including TDs to Jake Ortale and Beaulieu. Lee Griggs, Calvin Beaulieu and Hykeem Massey ran for touchdowns, and Tom Randall kicked five conversions.
Spring Valley didn’t get past midfield until late in the fourth quarter.

Basic 53, Eldorado 0 — At Basic, Devonte Boyd celebrated his birthday by catching two TD passes and making an interception, leading the No. 9 Wolves (4-1, 1-0 Southeast) to a homecoming victory over the Sundevils (1-4, 0-1).
Antraye Johnson rushed for 136 yards and three scores, and returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown. Boyd made seven catches for 85 yards, and Basic also got interceptions by homecoming king Anthony Owens and Dylan Green, the latter returning his 24 yards for a TD.
Justin Brown rushed for 113 yards to lead Eldorado.

Green Valley 49, Valley 0 — At Green Valley, Christian Lopez accounted for 185 total yards and four touchdowns as the seventh-ranked Gators (4-1, 1-0 Northeast) routed the Vikings (1-4, 0-1).
Lopez was 9 of 20 passing for 126 yards, and threw two touchdown passes to Kyler Chavez, who made four catches for 75 yards.
Lopez also rushed for two TDs while carrying seven times for 59 yards. Gino Jonassaint also ran for two scores and gained 81 yards on 11 carries.
Green Valley’s defense forced four turnovers, had five sacks and held Valley to 47 yards.
For Valley, Kennedy Williams made four catches and Eric Burrell had two sacks.

Legacy 20, Bonanza 7 — At Bonanza, Charles Julian compiled 236 yards and scored three touchdowns, carrying the Longhorns (3-3, 1-1 Southwest) past the Bengals (1-5, 0-2).
Julian rushed for a 30-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and his 31-yard burst in the third quarter gave Legacy a 14-0 lead.
Bonanza senior quarterback Brett Doyle capped a 77-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown keeper, but Julian answered only two plays later with a 65-yard TD run down the left sideline.
LaMarus Williams made five sacks for Legacy, which held the Bengals to 164 yards, all through the air.

Foothill 51, Del Sol 47 — At Foothill, Rickey Dixon spun into the end zone from 4 yards out with 20 seconds to play for his fourth touchdown, giving the Falcons (2-3, 1-0 Southeast) the victory over the Dragons (1-4, 0-1).
Dixon finished with 301 all-purpose yards, including TD catches of 71 and 45 yards from Drew Doxtator, who threw for 471 yards and four scores. Dixon also ran for a 15-yard TD.
Del Sol’s Dylan Greer threw for 252 yards and three TDs, and scored on a 1-yard keeper. Cameron Lamont gained 278 yards and two scores on 37 carries.

Moapa Valley 45, Boulder City 6 — At Boulder City, Kasen Hughes rushed for three touchdowns and caught a scoring pass from Josh Repp to help the Pirates (7-0, 3-0 I-A Sunset) rout the Eagles (6-1, 2-1).
Hughes, who rushed for 120 yards on 11 carries, scored on runs of 12, 41 and 18 yards and caught a 17-yard TD pass.
Conner Mortensen, who finished with 133 yards on 12 carries, added TD runs of 5 and 30 yards, and Sean McConnell returned a punt 85 yards for a score.
Xavier Steel scored on a 48-yard run for Boulder City.

Desert Pines 41, Virgin Valley 28 — At Desert Pines, Malik Davis rushed for 110 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Jaguars (4-3, 2-1 I-A Sunrise) over the Bulldogs (4-3, 1-2).
Trailing 15-14 in the third quarter, Desert Pines scored four consecutive touchdowns, three by Davis, including a 77-yard punt return.
Travis Nofoa was 6 of 10 passing for 107 yards and a TD, and Tim Hough led the Jaguars with three catches for 57 yards and a score.
For Virgin Valley, Cristian Aguirre was 7 of 19 for 157 yards and two TDs. Tyson Teerlink made five catches for 86 yards.

Shadow Ridge 55, Sierra Vista 24 — At Sierra Vista, Bakari Smith rushed for 180 yards and four TDs and also passed for two scores, lifting the Mustangs (1-5, 1-1 Southwest) to their first win, over the Mountain Lions (1-5, 0-2).
Sierra Vista led 10-7 before Smith put Shadow Ridge in control. Having thrown a 51-yard TD pass to Marquise Evans, he ran for two 1-yard scores in the first half and had TD runs of 65 and 3 yards in the third quarter. Chris Goodie also caught a 15-yard TD pass.
Two of Sierra Vista’s scores came on kickoff returns, an 80-yarder by Deyon McKinney in the first quarter and an 87-yarder by Maliek Broady in the third.

Chaparral 40, Sunrise Mountain 10 — At Chaparral, Jason Jonshon rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns and also threw for a score, sparking the Cowboys (4-3, 1-2 I-A Sunrise) past the Miners (2-5, 0-3).
Chaparral compiled 350 yards on the ground, led by Antonio Thomas with 180 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries.
Sherman Nash led Sunrise Mountain, rushing for 174 yards and a TD on 22 carries.

Clark 27, Western 13 — At Western, Donte Bowen rushed for 126 yards and a touchdown, sparking the Chargers (1-6, 1-2 I-A Sunset) to their first victory, beating the Warriors (1-6, 0-3).
Kareem Warren added 102 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Clark, which scored a TD in each quarter.
Western quarterback Larry Jennings threw for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Faith Lutheran 50, Pahrump Valley 0 — At Faith Lutheran, sophomore Greg Benson threw four touchdown passes in the first half, and the Crusaders (4-3, 2-1 I-A Sunset) blocked two punts by the Trojans (1-6, 1-2).
Benson completed 12 of 14 passes for 210 yards, including TDs of 17 and 58 to Anthony Pryatel-Farmer and 15-yarders to Sean Bischel and Vinny DeGeorge.
Pryatel-Farmer made seven catches for 159 yards, and Mark Rubalcaba supplied a 66 yard TD run.
Pahrump Valley was led by Dalton Beighley with 92 yards receiving on four catches, and Dustin Dillon made an interception.

The Meadows 35, White Pine 12 — At The Meadows, Bryson Bickart and Chase Marrs each rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown as the Mustangs (1-6, 1-5 Division III Southern) routed the Bobcats (2-4, 1-4).
The Meadows’ Chisup Kim caught an 8-yard TD pass from Jacob Gleason and ran for a 1-yard score to help the Mustangs build an 18-6 halftime lead.
Marrs and Bickart scored on runs of 1 and 42 yards, respectively, in the second half.
The Meadows’ Robert List made three catches for 38 yards and returned a fumble 1 yard for a TD.
Freshman kicker Tommy Halkyard added a 34-yard field goal.
White Pine quarterback Aryton Almberg had a 2-yard TD run and threw a 42-yard TD pass to Ben Miller.

Spring Mountain 60, Sandy Valley 14 — At Spring Mountain, Marcus Thomas ran for three touchdowns and threw four TD passes to guide the Golden Eagles (5-1, 3-1 Division IV Southern) past the Sidewinders (1-4, 0-3).
Thomas scored on runs of 20, 64 and 65 yards. He hooked up with Dwayne James on scoring strikes of 55 and 18 yards to help Spring Mountain build a 46-6 halftime lead. James also made two interceptions.
Thomas also threw TD passes of 23 yards to Bruce Travis-Collins and 39 to Isaiah Brooks. Ashley Christmas added a 65-yard TD run.
For Sandy Valley, Darby Wadley had a 1-yard TD run and a 50-yard touchdown pass to Jerremy Hall.
Indian Springs 49, Beatty 8 — At Beatty, Troy Heath completed 7 of 9 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns and also ran five times for 107 yards and a score as the Thunderbirds (2-4, 2-2 Division IV Southern) beat the Hornets (0-4, 0-3).
Devin Jackson rushed for 165 yards and two TDs on 11 carries and caught two passes for 55 yards, and Tristan Thomas had three receptions for 135 yards and two TDs.
Lincoln County 58, Calvary Chapel 12 — At Panaca, Preston Avery ended the first half with a 108-yard interception return for a touchdown, highlighting the win by the Lynx (6-1, 6-0 Division III Southern) over the Lions (3-3, 3-2).
The interception return is believed to be a state record.
Lincoln County’s Derek Cheeney scored on a 92-yard interception return and also had TDs rushing and receiving.
Colton Johnson gained 72 yards on eight carries, helping Lincoln County roll up 334 yards on the ground.
Lynx quarterback Ryan Rippetoe passed for 90 yards and two TDs.
Calvary Chapel's TDs came on a run by A.J. Davis and a pass from Riley Clark to Chris Basilio.
Mountain View 46, Sage Hill (Calif.) 0 — At Newport Beach, Calif., the Saints (6-1) posted their third shutout, beating the Lightning (0-7).
Needles 46, Lake Mead 0 — At Henderson International, the Mustangs (4-2, 4-1 Division III Southern) bolted to a 21-0 lead five minutes into the game and went on to blank the Eagles (0-6, 0-5).
