Shadow Ridge boys race to Laughlin Invitational title

Shadow Ridge’s boys cross country team placed five runners among the top seven finishers Saturday to easily capture the large school boys race at the Laughlin Invitational at Mountain View Park.

The Mustangs’ Nick Oberdin won the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 45.6 seconds, and Shadow Ridge completed its scoring before any other team could send two runners across the line.

Shadow Ridge, which got a third-place effort from Garrett Simpson (17:47.7), a fourth-place finish from Steven Roundy (17:59.8), and a fifth-place showing from Joshua Ballard (18;00), had a team score of 20. Desert Oasis was second with 65, followed by Mohave (Ariz.) with 84.

Desert Oasis’ Frankie Martinez was second in 17:20.5.

Tech dominated the boys small school race, placing six runners in the top 11, including the top three finishers.

Martin Ponce won the race in 17:09.2 with teammates Zach Zimdars (17:28.9) and Albert Munoz (17:35.4) claiming the next two spots.

Boulder City’s Evan Klouse was fourth in 17:55.2.

The Roadrunners finished with a team score of 25. Boulder City was second with 51, and Sunrise Mountain took third with 82.

Shadow Ridge used its depth to win the girls large school race, placing all seven of its runners in the top 14 on the way to a score of 36. Lake Havasu (Ariz.) was second with 69, one point better than Basic.

Desert Oasis’ Brooke Locey won the race in 20:08.6. Shadow Ridge’s Ciara Jackson was second in 20:52.5, followed by Basic’s Jessica Raymond in 20:58.9.

Pahrump Valley rode a pack of runners in the sixth, eighth, ninth and 10th spots to victory in the small school girls race.

Despite not having a top-five finishers, the Trojans had 43 points to easily outdistance second-place Sunrise Mountain, which had 65. Boulder City was third with 71.

Sunrise Mountain’s Ebonique Diaz won the race in 20:17.4. Boulder City’s Jessica Tobler was second in 20:46, with River Valley’s (Ariz.) Courtney Lewis placing third in 21:27.9.
