Buell’s ace helps serve up all-star sweep by Sunset

As a sophomore, Centennial’s Dustin Buell worked on his serve for an hour every day before practice.

It came in handy for the senior middle blocker Thursday.

Buell compiled six kills, three blocks and the match-winning ace to help the Sunset Region hold off the Sunrise, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24 in the Southern Nevada Volleyball Coaches Association boys volleyball all-star match at Bonanza.

“It was a lot of fun,” said Buell, who has signed with Belmont Abbey College (N.C.). “It was a lot of excitement. We were all just playing, and it was a lot of fun; not a mad competition.”

Shadow Ridge’s Tanner Maxwell, who has signed with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, added 11 kills and two assists for the Sunset, and Mustangs teammate Brandon Fisher supplied seven kills and two blocks.

Braden Taylor of Shadow Ridge had 24 assists, three kills and four blocks for the Sunset, and Centennial’s Tanner Bonds supplied three kills and four blocks.

Valley’s Peter Nunes had 10 assists for the Sunrise. Coronado’s Brandon Dau had five kills, two blocks and an ace.

GIRLS: Sunset 3, Sunrise 0 — UNLV signee Bree Hammel of Bonanza had six kills and three aces, and Centennial’s Lacy Miyahira added five kills, nine assists and five digs as the Sunset swept to victory, 25-21, 25-10, 25-22 at Bonanza.

Bishop Gorman’s Kylee Chun dished out 10 assists, and Bonanza’s Lauren Karn had nine assists and three kills for the Sunset. Arbor View’s Amber Graham and Centennial’s Kaitlyn Kelly each had seven kills.

For the Sunrise, Las Vegas’ Tiffany Jackson dealt 10 assists, Valley’s Lenore Porter had eight assists and three kills, and Las Vegas’ Desirae Lair contributed seven kills.

Coronado’s Kuulei Piena had five kills and two aces, and UNR signee Sommer King of Green Valley supplied five kills.
